Icon38 Flyers sign Matt Read to 4yr $14.5mil extension

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...medium=twitter

Lots of rumors at the draft that the Flames and Flyers were discussing trades were Read was one of the pieces coming back to the Flames.

Also rumors that Weisbrod was really high on Read.

Just speculation but I have a feeling if he had made it to free agency the Flames would have been bidding for his services.

Is there a NMC once the UFA years kick in? I bet the Flyers trade him before this extension kicks in.

I agree that the Flames would have gone after him if he hit UFA market. It's been noted ever since Weisbrod came on board that he has wanted him.

Where does Philly get all this money?

Has he done anything to deserve this amount of money yet? Seems like way too much to me when you see many players signed to "bridge" contracts. Seriously, 1.5 years in the NHL and he gets this deal?

Brodie must be pissed.

(I know Read is much older and established)

That's the difference from RFA vs UFA. UfA's get payed.

I don't think he took a discount, but he would have gotten that money on the open market.

I think that value is a little heavy, but not much. I would compare to a guy like Stalberg, got 3 mill on the open market, has put up similar numbers to Read. Read has shown he is a really good fit in Philly and is willing to (also able to) play up and down in the lineup, similar to Glencross.

This seems like the contract I would of given RNH less 1-2 years

Damn. Thought Philly would let him slip and perhaps the Flames could grab him.
