In my mind it was down to Glencross or Giordano for the C. I would have considered Wideman for an A as well.

Yeah I dont get that either. There still has to be a framework.

If you go scorched-earth you wind up like the Oilers where losing becomes expected and getting back in the win column is much, much more difficult.

Glencross takes too many nights off to make him captain. I think he makes a decent A, but I'm not sure I want the guy being that much of a role model.

If he wasn't out of here sooner or later, Cammy would've been my choice for the C. It seems like with every prospect interview, someone talked about looking up to him and being a great example of an NHLer. With the circumstances being what they are however, Gio was the right choice.

Giordano is a good choice. I wonder how the decision was made though. Was it a group decision among the players and staff? Was it solely the choice of management/coaching? Was Cammy possibly offered the C first and turned it down, or was it offered directly to Giordano with management leaving it open to trade Cammy?

I would assume it's the first scenario, but man that'd be interesting to know for sure.

I know il get slammed for this as I need to move on, but it sure does feel very weird as #12 is not the captain anymore.

It was the night that Team Canada was announced for the 2010 Olympics and Doughty was a surprise addition to the team, at the expense of Bouwmeester. From what I remember, it was probably Bouw's best game that season.

In his interview last week, Hartley said he discussed it with the players in their exit interviews last season, and he also got input from management and ownership and it was pretty much a unanimous decision.

I think a lot of fans feel the same way.

I'll get slammed for this, but i think it feels right not having #12 on the team or as captain. It's the first time in years that i think the flames are going in the right direction.

Generally it's quite common for the coaching staff to ask the players whom they would vote as their captain, and then to evaluate amongst themselves as a coaching staff who they think best fits the role.

You want a captain that the players respect, so the players' opinion is quite an important factor...so yes, the first scenario is bang on.

"I felt there was no sense wasting paper to go through a vote," coach Bob Hartley said. "I think it was pretty unanimous throughout the entire organization."

Giordano assumes the role from former captain Jarome Iginla, who was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins at last year's trade deadline.

What he showed Hartley made him an easy heir to the captaincy.

"A captain should be an example of what you want to get accomplished in the organization," Hartley said. "Here's a guy that works nonstop. He's always there for the others. He never complains. There's never a bad day for Gio. Whenever you sit with him, he doesn't have the whiny look or anything. It's 'Lets do it' and we do it as a pro. Conditioning-wise, he's at the top.

"For me, since last year with the departure of Jarome, right away I started to look. Every day that I was talking to Jay, talking to the management, even at the end of the year when we met the players one-on-one, we were asking the players 'Who do you think is the best leader'."

The answer: Giordano.

Sean Monahan on Mark Giordano getting the 'C': "I think it's a great pick and I'd love for him to be my captain."
