FYP

Still a ton to prove for any of the Oilers' kids. All paid too much too soon.

No, that contract doesn't look as bad. There are still question marks about Hall's ability to stay healthy.

at least we will not have to deal with a picture of RNH holding up a wad of cash to his ear for now, because presumably his shoulder is unable to support that much weight right now.

did the Oilers braintrust just print off 21 copies of the same contract and leave them in the players locker with a note to sing and return at thier convience?

Nazem the Dream and Big Daddy Kane must be saying WTF........

can someone remind me of the real reason behind the lockout?

To provide internet posters the opportunity to make banal and completely inaccurate comments in a pathetic attempt to be funny or clever.

Too much for a guy who has 22 career goals and won't play a full season the rest of his career, however long that might be. But on the other hand the Oilers can just put him on LTIR and pay someone else that much.

Giroux is a legitimate game changer - one of the best players in the league. I hope to God one of the Flames' prospects becomes that good and we are 'forced' to pay him $8m.

Once again, the Oiler fan mantra: <the bold> will be

"Give 'em the money because they will be. They will be Gretzky, Messier and Coffey 2.0. So give 'em the money."

Meh let the Oilers fans wallow in their dreams as it's the offseason which is the only time of the year the Oilers matter. The regular season is downtime for them.

This isn't 2003. You get paid for your potential...not your past. The Canadians messed up royally with PK and the Leafs with Kadri. They will be paying through the nose for their decisions when those contracts come up...

Funny you decide to not bold the part where I say I'm not Kreskin. 6 million for guys with that kind of talent hits on the positive side of hit or miss. Never mind the fact that a $6 million contract is far easier to trade should they need to as opposed to $8-9 million....

IMO his sample size is to small to make this offer now. To me it looks like an over reaction by the Oilers management and screams more of a PR move then a hockey move. The smart hockey move would to be to offer this contract after this season (which he would still accept) to minimize risk (injury/not living up to expectations/losing motivation/etc).

All that has been said over the last half decade, this team has burned through a couple ELC on top players and are still struggling to get out of the bottom third of the league. Sure it may appear they are saving some money on 4 to 5 players (it is only saving if they continue to develop into top ten scorers) other wise they are overpaying or getting market value (which I think are the two more likely outcomes).

Paying through the nose as opposed to the bargain basement contract RNH signed for 22 goals in his career? You think Kadri will get more than $6 million on his next deal? I highly doubt it unless he finishes top 10 in scoring. Not even sure the Habs would want to commit more than $6 million long term to Subban as they don't seem completely sold on him yet.

Why wouldn't the Oilers wait to see if RNH overcomes his injury issues?

If you pay him like he has never had injury issues, he'll play like he has never had injury issues.

I'm starting to think the Oilers management has been reading "The Secret".

as a GM would you rather not pay thru the nose for someone who has a decent body of work, rather than one good season?

what if Nazem the Dream scores 10 goals this year, then Nonis looks smart.....

to me you sign those guys to a bridge deal that takes them up to the year before they become UFA's then the team still has some leverage - but what do i know about being an NHL GM

Nazem Kadri wasn't a #1 overall pick, nor was PK Subban. And the latter's bridge deal turned out to be a pretty epic mistake.

I'm just going to post this again.

That is a chart of every 2nd contract handed out to a top 5 pick since the 2nd Bettman Lockout.

Now, look at all of the ones that are 5 years or longer. Ask yourself, "which of those turned out to be a bad deal"? My answer is "none of them". Granted, a couple of the recent ones are probably too early to tell.

Ask yourself, "which of those contracts would the team have liked to extend for an extra year or two at the same cap hit?" My answer is "all of them", with the possible exception of Ovy and Backstrom only because those two are long enough as it is.

These deals tend to work out okay.

Here is to Hall, Eberle, Hopkins getting cozy with the long term deals and mailing in games at some point of their contracts. Please give Yapuke the same rest and relaxation deal.

If they don't make the playoffs in the next 2 years i expect a big shake up with the kids.
