So, when they get to the 50's and 60's in history class, they should get a bunch of fat white guys in hoods to burn a cross on her lawn in the middle of the night. Maybe tie some dark skinned manequins to a truck bumper and drive it up dirt roads, or hang the manequins from tree limbs, stuff like that.

Ah.... Yes. I remember as a young Jewish lad, they re-enacted the holocaust by taking me down to the school cafeteria, and throwing me in the meat locker naked, and threw in a can of dry ice to simulate the gas cannister. They had the other little kids perform cavity searches on me looking for valuables. It really was the golden age of education. It only took 14 years of therapy, and I happy to announce, I can finally buy bulk packages of chicken nuggets at Costco without defecating on the floor.

No need to re-enact it, they hired actors to do this so 12 year old girls didn't have to.

Well if they didn't rip your teeth out of your mouth for your fillings, and have a fat Nazi prison wardens wife select your skin for its tattoos to make lampshades and wallets its wasn't really realistic at all.

Or if you had a twin sibling in your class, they could have thrown one of you in an oven or freezer to see if the other twin felt it, oh sorry wait that was the Japanese.

Was she emancipated at the end of the field trip?

Hard to believe such a bull#### idea for a "school" could fail so horribly at something. Parents who condemn their children to this instead of a normal education kind of deserve the crap they pay for.

The girl in the story doesn't deserve what she received.

But in a broader sense, the parents of all children enrolled at this school shouldn't be surprised when the bull#### alternative school they chose to subject their children to isn't up to snuff.

Sorry, only half way through by coffee, but what about Hartford Trinity makes if a "alernative school"?

Do you think all "alternative" schools are bull####, or is there actually something in particular about this one that you object to?

I clearly am missing something, but what makes this place an alternative school?

I don't know. I just went with the term he used. Perhaps he is referring more to the camp-type place they went to on the field trip?

Nothing, he's just rambling without reading. This is simply a middle school, although it is a magnet school so it requires applications and draws from a wider area.

The incident occurred at a camp students attended, and that camp does seem to have some interesting thoughts on how to educate, although apparently they aren't that odd if you're from Alabama.

The Nature's Classroom ####. Thought that was the foundation of the school, not just the field trip. My bad.

There's a reason that children make such ruthless soldiers when someone is sick enough to push it on them: they don't have a really well-developed sense of empathy, or at least their sense of empathy is easily repressed in the face of encouraged behaviour. So running them through a slavery simulation at that age doesn't really team them anything about the history of slavery, and could actually encourage patterns of behaviour. If kids overhear racial slurs as part of their daily life and then have a field-trip where they're encouraged to use such slurs, it only serves to reinforce it.

My one question is whether the girl was chosen to be in a slave role because she was black, or was it a random selection and there were other white kids who were slaves as well? If it's the latter, then it's simply ignorant (for the reasons mentioned above). If it's the former, it's hardcore, virulently racist to suggest that black kids need an education on what it's like to be a slave, and white kids need an education on what it's like to be a slave owner.
