Nice to see that CBC will keep up the HNiC tradition. Awesome intros are here to stay!

Along time ago, I would be on the keep the tradition of CBC doing hockey bandwagon, but honestly, I really just want to a great package for hockey.

I think that the CBC has as much eastern bias as TSN, and honestly TSN has the far better hockey people. If CBC keeps HNIC, then fine, but I really didn't (and don't care) where it goes. Seems like TSN has taken the best CBC staff over time (with the exception of Elliot).

I am one of those who hates the fact that we have a government sponsored (and taxpayer funded) television station.

It will be nice not to go straight to Sportscentre after Saturday games.

If they do an additional national package I hope it is Sunday afternoon instead of Sunday night. All the good HBO shows are on Sunday nights while there's not much on Sunday afternoons.

That's too bad. I was hoping they would decide not to renew.
Frankly the only thing I ever watch on CBC is HNIC and if they lost that CBC would be significantly closer to extinction... which is no great loss as far as I'm concerned. Its just a money pit that the taxpayer keeps refilling.

HNIC is an institution. TSN is a broadcast. There is no comparison.

Here's an option. Ask the players what they would like to see happen for Saturday nights. Some of them will take the Bell money for sure. But I think most would choose CBC. Even after all these years and their rich lifestyles, you can still tell it is a privilege to put on that white towel and be interviewed by HNIC at ice level.

HNIC commentary might not be to everyone's liking - but surely it is better than what TSN gives us on That's Hockey. What a bunch of blowhards.
I really think the tradition angle is something to be considered. When HNIC lost their theme song to TSN, I thought it might somehow take a bit of that magic away because so much history was ingrained in that song. Now, I think the new song is great, and when I hear the old one on TSN it just rings hollow to me. It's because it's not the song that carriers the tradition, it's the experience you attach to it. Hockey on a Saturday isn't special or unique, but HNIC on CBC is.
As cheesy as it sounds, having it on TSN would instantly take away that magic. It's HNIC because it's on CBC. Remembering sitting down with my dad when I was a little kid, watching HNIC on a Saturday night, it was part of where I started loving hockey. It's been around for longer than most of us posting here have been alive. If it moved to another station, it's just Saturday hockey.

I hadn't thought about what the article mentions but it makes sense

if CBC loses HNIC than they might never get a hockey package again, so keeping HNIC with them is a win for the NHL, because it says the add some games to TSNs package, and gives SNET the sunday night game as well as some other things as well

that's a win for the NHL

I am thinking Sunday will be Snet. I also thought the NHL was toying with the idea of that being more of an all access/open mike type of broadcast, but that remains to be seen.

TSN has Sunday Night Football, and I don't think the NFL, or NHL, will agree to/want to be on TSN2 for the first 4-5 months (including NFL Playoffs).

Glad HNic will still be on CBC. For as clunky, the TSN production sometimes is a little too slick and the in-game drama/storylines are more manufactured than enhanced, and sliding right into Sportscentre. Doesn't help with the likes of Dreger between periods (as dumb as guys like Stock and Healy are) liking to hear himself talk.

There should always be a Saturday afternoon game on CBC. Triple-header

CBC lost the Jays.
CBC lost the CFL
CBC lost the Olympics
CBC will lose the NHL one day

Who cares. As long as I get double header hockey Canadian hockey games every Saturday night, I'm happy. Heck, it can be on PBS for all I care.

Oh I'm sure that someone will chime in and say that the CBC makes money off of HNIC which is a silly argument considering taxpayers should care if the CBC makes money as long as it's not in the red. In fact any profict the CBC makes should go back to taxpayers. Spending more taxpayer money in hopes the CBC breaks even or makes a little profit is hollow as when it cost $100 to make $5 it was one thing but paying $250 to make $5 is just wasting $150.
Do you honestly think CBC won't be able to make their money back on HNIC without tax payer assistance, or did you just feel like writing a pithy rant?

When it comes to the CBC, E Estrada makes no sense and it's not worth discussing the topic.

I don't understand this hate at all. Why the heck does EVERYTHING have to be privatized? If the CBC receives a billion dollars per year (averaging out to 31 dollars per year per canadian), I'm getting one damn good deal. Some of us here can't afford the 40 dollars per month for cable tv, and don't have the luxuries of access to TSN, TSN2, all the SN channels, etc. etc.. The CBC isn't there to just flush all of our money down the drain, it's there to give access to those of us who need it. It does more good for ALL of us than bad. As long as they remain accountable, and free from government control, I want the CBC around. And HNIC for that matter.

FYI, the government contribution to the CBC amounts to only 0.003 percent of federal government spending per year.

Sweet. The government should give me $100k a year. It'd be only 0.0000003% of their budget.

Many viewers would agree with you about another network getting the HNIC package would make it just another night with hockey. That has been said by RDS viewers who watch the Canadiens every Saturday. Saturday Habs games used to be on SRC but switched to RDS approximately a decade ago. The games do not have that magic now since all 82 Habs game are on RDS.
