Manziel could go anywhere in the draft really. #2 is highly unlikely, in all reality his best case is third or fourth QB off the board (after Bridgewater, Boyd and if he declares, Hundley)

I admit I don't know enough about Manziel - what are the concerns about him? I read about some off-field troubles.
He won the Heisman and is projected to maybe win it again:

I think there's more than enough evidence to prove that "drafting for need" is a flawed philosophy as opposed to "best player available" Clowney is a can't miss stud. He doesn't even have to be DL. He's fast enough to be used as OLB in a 3-4 defense. Take a QB in the later rounds or even in 2015.
If they don't take Clowney, they really don't have a plan.
|
Umm no, they can't. You can't win 0-0.
I think it has been pretty well proven that you can't win in the NFL without competent QB play, and there are not enough competent QB's to go around. Adding Clowney turns the Browns from a good defense into a top 5 defense. That's great, but it isn't going to win them games if their offense continues to be among the worst.
If they don't pick Clowney they have a plan to actually score points. Not drafting for need is all well and good at every position but QB.

Defense can score in the NFL!
The Browns aren't winning in 2014 either. Build with defense first, shoot for 2015 and onward.

The 2015 draft class doesn't look to have nearly as many high-end QB prospects as 2014 (unless Manziel doesn't declare this year). Plus, Cleveland could luck out with a last place schedule and finish 6-10, completely missing out on a shot at a franchise QB.

Also, I think what was lost in all of this is that Jason LaCanfora is a complete hack and should never be quoted on anything. He's also BFFs with the Browns front office, so take everything he says about them with a massive does of salt.

Good test for the Chiefs. That defense looks legit so tonight will be a good indicator of that. Dontari Poe seems to have figured it out and if he has look out. A 340 pound DT who moves like a speed rusher is scary.

Sadly, we have entered the territory that Johnny Football will be a Top 10 pick, where he will ultimately be picked will depend on what team falls in love with him.
And I hope to god the team I root for isn't that one.

The play he made against Alabama last week is a perfect example. The media goes nuts about it and what a great play it was. It was a terrible decision and pure luck that his WR was able to get that ball.

That makes no sense. QB's take time to develop. They already have a good defense. Add a strong QB to that team and they may be a contender in 2-3 years. Add another DE and they're in the same place they are now.

Same with last year against Bama, heaving balls down the field and hoping the guy who catches is it is on his team. I haven't watched him much this year, and missed most of the Bama game, but he doesn't appear to have any ability to go through progressions. Everyone is fast at the next level, and guys rarely make mistakes that will allow the plays he makes in college.

Like Tebow someone will fall in love with Manziel and pick him. Unlike Tebow though I think he can succeed in the NFL. His arm strength is better than people give him credit for and he's actually fairly accurate. Plus even though you don't like all the stupidity he's gotten himself involved with off the field, it hasn't affected him on the field which you like too. I see Manziel getting picked pretty much right where Tebow was, 20-25.

Ya, I'm liking what I've seen from that defence so far, and you're right it will be a good test. I hope that Houston also shows well tonight. It should be a decent, close game. I think that the spread is just a field goal.

Well a Thursday night road game this early in the season with that much travel usually doesn't go well for the visiters.
The Chargers proved that the Eagles are indeed a team that can be beaten as their defence has a lot of holes at this point in time. Problem is that the Chiefs offence is still very pedestrian and really has an awful passing game. After Dwayne Bowe the receiving core is bad, and teams are able to key on the run and keep Charles in check, and they really have no other running back. Smith has done a really good job of protecting the football though, and the defence has been pretty good the first couple games. Still Vick, Desean Jackson, and McCoy look dangerous everytime they tough the ball. Chiefs need to get a lot of hits on Vick early if they want to have a chance. But if this one starts getting away from them, Philly can laugh all the way to a 56-7 win.

Yeah, Manziel is no Tebow ... in a positive way. Manziel's "off field issues" are pretty minor too. He's not getting in fights, getting drug charges etc, he's flashing money and not always saying the right things.

As an article stated earlier this week, Manziel isn't a magnet for trouble he's just a knucklehead.
I think he will be a top 15 pick come draft time, barring some kind of gigantic mistake.
