I assume there will be more cuts before the next game as Abbotsford is playing on the weekend. They still only have about half of a roster after the first round of cuts.

They will also have a handful of guys on PTOs. I know Taranto and at least one other guy that played in Penticton is participating in the Abbotsford camp.

Sounds like Monahan is everything that he came advertized as. If he really is ready to play a steady role its a no brainer.

I doubt it. The flames don't practice until Friday and the next pre-season game is Monday. If they were worried about Abbotsford they would have done more cuts yesterday.

My guess is the next round of cuts is after Mondays game.

I don't believe the OHL or WHL has started yet, though I could be wrong, which could be why Kanzig is still in camp. The coaches can keep working with him and he's not missing any game action.
Yup, Poirier's team has already played two regular season games and has another on the 20th. If they already knew he wasn't going to make the final cut he's best served helping his team out, and making a stronger case for his WJHC inclusion. I'm really excited to see how this year's picks do this upcoming season, especially Poirier, Klimchuck and Kanzig.

As far as Monahan goes:
I get the value in sending him down and having him potentially dominate, but what I wonder is whether or not that is really better. Is it better for him to dominate a bunch of kids? Or better for him to hold his own against a bunch of grown men in the NHL? I almost think it would be a greater confidence booster to be on the NHL roster and be able to handle the day-to-day tasks than it would be to go to junior and player against a lot if guys that aren't on your level.

I love having Monahan and Kanzig up still. I would really like if both stayed up this year because I think they can both grow and be great players in the future

Abbotsford only has about 7 fwds and 5 def as far as I can tell....maybe they have a few others on PTO, but enough to fill out the roster? not so sure.
I'd expect Ferland, Granlund, Street, Billins to be added before Sunday at least.

I wish we'd get some AHL superstars over in Abby to fill out the roster a bit. Or some former players now over in Europe. Put some vets on that team. Only a couple, though, only recognizable names.

Honestly, how cool would it be if we brought Rico Fata over from the Finnish League to play in Abby? This board would blow up.

I agree with keeping Monahan up. Sending him to jr to dominate a bunch if guys who won't ever get a sniff at the NHL isn't the best way to develop him. As long as he can be productive with the Flames and fill in a role, then no harm keeping him up for the year.

That is pretty much the question - that, and is he ready?

For me, if it was a case whereby he was on a solid team last year and was racking up the points, I would probably lean more towards the playing with men side. But he didn't. He hasn't yet had the chance to tear it up. Confidence is a big thing and there is nothing wrong with getting the opportunity to get your game on.

Personally, I would like to see him tear up the OHL and be a big player on Team Canada. THEN come to the Flames more ready and more confident.

Ben Street is now on the Abby roster page along with the 13 players assigned yesterday. Pending cut?

I say unless Monahan slows down to end camp, give him the up to 9 games to see how he looks. By then they have a better idea of how the NHL schedule is going to impact him, and whether it would be worth keeping him up to develop or sending him down. The biggest question mark in my mind is how he can respond to the grind, not just playing against men here and there, but back to back, one day rest, long road trips, etc. If he is not ready for that at this level, protect him from wearing himself out and getting injured

well, for the next 2 years I really wouldn't mind if the Flames did terrible. Ekblad and McDavid look like they could be franchise changing players

Or we could wait until he actually plays a regular season game for us before we hope he gets put on waivers.

You can wait all you like, poster Gary83. I'll stick to knowing this is a terrible NHL defenseman. Derp.

I am fine if we don't do that. Go ahead and let Begin play and be a leader on the team, especially if the rumours are true that he wants to transition into coaching. He could be like a Dave Lowry for the Heat and provide leadership and mentoring from the 4th line.

Other than Begin, give these kids the reigns and see what happens. If young guys like Reinhart are on the cusp of making the Flames then I would rather he be the "Go To" guy on the Heat playing as a top 6 than stuck behind some AHL allstar. The same would be said for any of Knight, Horak, Granlund, Ferland, Hanowski, etc. Even Nemisz and Byron are guys I would rather we throw into bigger roles now to see if they work out (since that is why we still have them) instead of burying them behind non-Flames assets.

Its bad enough that during a rebuild we have so many vets on the Flames that there is no room for the kids to get spots, the last thing we need to do is clog up the system with more vets taking the top line spots on the Heat.

I think there is something to be said for playing against players better than you. Thats a great way to improve. If the competition is a few notches below I'm not sure you learn much from that. If you're already better than them how do you improve?

I'd rather see him traded. Putting him on waivers might be needed but realistically he should fetch us some kind of asset as an established bottom pairing tough guy and his cap hit isn't crippling. Also, if he goes on waivers and doesn't get picked up he will still be our problem next year.

I guess with Breen hurt there is less of a rush to send SOB packing but I would definitely rather continue Breen's development with the big club than watch SOB for the next two years.
