But they don't stay the same, they get more expensive relative to salary and job availability.

Except for the fact that they don't. Less jobs, less money, more debt, less value in education, higher cost of housing.

I agree that 2008 didn't help in this regards to a historical recession but that's more bad timing than anything. Opportunity is still abundant for those that are willing to put in the work.

I'd like to add that the kids of today are going to be even more screwed than us. They'll be entering the work force when things will be drastically changing in the world.

Depends where you are. In Calgary sure, opportunities all over the place. In many parts of North America that's not the case, and picking up and moving isn't always as easy as it seems.
There are certainly people who moan about not having jobs etc. who are victims of their own laziness or poor decisions. But there are also a ton of people who have done everything 'right' and find themselves screwed.

One way or another things in the energy industry are going to be vastly different in 20-30 years. It'll be Gen Y and Gen X that's going to be making the decisions and these kids job prospects will be at the whim of what we do.
Like I said earlier if Fusion power comes online, everything will be turned on it's head. If Climate Change starts having a tangible impact that will also change a lot of what we do. Transportation will be vastly different, Brick and Mortor stores and retail in general will be massively changed. I don't really know if a generation has ever had to go through this much change when they enter the workforce. Not since the globalization of the world economy at least.

Since Gen Y are the smartest and hardest working generation yet I am sure they will find ways to succeed in these new times.
I am sure they won’t just sulk, moan and complain about useless and dumb baby boomers stealing the jobs they are entitled to.

I think a 23-year old grad student at MIT invented a robot powerful enough recently to get that stick removed from your ass.
No word on one strong enough to move that chip from your shoulder though.

There are always people succeeding. The issue is limited availability of jobs, capital, resources, housing, etc...
Even if you manage to get a 100k salary within 5-10 years of graduating, the cost of housing rises and rises.
Let's put it this way. In law school, which I somewhat recently graduated from, the number of spots across Canada has remained stable since 1975:
http://www.cba.org/dev/BC/bartalk_95...est_cohen.aspx
Meanwhile the population of Canada has doubled since then. The population of undergraduate students has more than doubled. The next hurdle is getting an articling position, which is tougher and tougher every year. The hire backs after articling have got worse every year. The salaries relative to capital/housing expenses/tuition/overhead have dropped every year. The only thing increasing is our workload.
It's not an issue of getting ahead. Not only is it harder to get ahead, but once you get there the pie is smaller. No one is "sulking and moaning". Our generation works longer hours, get more training, etc..There's just nothing there at the end for us.
On top of all of that, our generation has to deal with BS like affirmative action, diversified hiring, etc... instead of dealing with their own racist/sexist infrastructure, boomers will load bottom positions with disposable minority workforces so they can promote X amount of our staff is female/visible minority. In reality it's all old white dudes at the top taking more and more.

I agree that sometimes no matter how hard some try they don't get the breaks but that's not something exclusive to today's generation. I have two young boys and expect they will have their challenges as the workplace landscape changes in the coming years and since they were born we have invested in heritage education funds for them to ensure they have the same opportunities present to other's at that time. I have no idea what the landscape will be when they go to post secondary but I don't want them feeling sorry for themselves when their time comes as like all generations they will have to deal with the reality of the times.

As long as you toss em out of the nest the minute they hit 18 with $100.00 in their pocket they'll turn out alright.
and the minute they move out, convert their room into a sex dungeon so there's no chance they'll come back.
Prepare them for real life, start charging them for rent and laundry and food the minute they turn 12 and can start selling news papers on the corner and scrapping corns off of old woman's feet.
And don't get me into Immigrants, driving around listening to their raps and shooting all the jobs.
Young people suck.
Hipsters suck even more.
