Agree with " Alberta Beef" post.
I would add Ferland fighting for a job, but if he does not get healthy soon, he is out.

Jooris has the best shot to bee that guy IMO. I was very close to putting him in the group that is fighting for a job, but I just don't see him overcoming those numbers.
To me Blair Jones is a surprise too, but didn't name him above just because most expected him to be in the mix, whereas I had him being shipped off on loan somewhere away from the franchise.

I see him as a guy fighting with Jackman, Jooris, B. Jones, Bouma and even Knight for a spot as a 4th liner (I would demote him before making him sit in the press box). As good as he has been I just don't think he has been better than enough of those those guys as they have all brought very good efforts.

I think Poirier has an extremely outside shot at this point if he keeps up his strong play. Granlund is being tested to see if he can handle duties on the lower lines. If he can, I think he makes a strong push for the team and sees spot duty in the top 9.

Can we read anything into Horak moving to a more traditional jersey number?

Yep. I'd keep Monahan, Poirier, Bouma, Wotherspoon, Horak, Ferland, Jooris, Granlund to keep fighting for a spots.
Most of the rest can go.

I was was all for the rebuild 3+ years ago...and I'm so happy it's finally underway...but I must admit, I'm already noticing that watching the games aren't going to be a high priority for me...as the year seems like a write-off.
I will NOT miss a game, however, if Monahan sticks around for 9 games to start the season.
Am I unique in this? I wonder if stuff like his matters to management or if they always do what's best for the players/team? I hope the latter is true, but I also know I'd be more likely to watch if he's playing.
I have a greater respect for the team trying to avoid a rebuild...it's can be tricky for he business side if things, it seems.

I 100% agree. I'll watch as many games as I can, but I can't say that I'll have the same excitement for the games I've had in the past. It's more an excitement to see 'X' player than the team itself.
That being said, I haven't had a game-to-game excitement to watch the Flames lately in the first place (well, past January anyway. My optimism has usually worn off by then) so this is definitely a huge step up.
I think if the Flames are able to ice kids like Monahan, Baertschi and Backlund paired with Brodie and 'insert exciting goalie here' they'll be in a much better position at putting butts in the seats too.

Yes and no for me. Yes in that I get the feeling and I'm ok with missing some games when I used to not feel that way. Only thing is, I've felt that way for the past few seasons. That hasn't changed this year, at least not entirely, but I do think its reduced a bit. I'm just as convinced this year as I was last that this team isn't going anywhere, but I'm much more excited to watch this team.
Not because I really think they have a better shot, but because I'm excited to watch a substantially different group. The old version of the Flames had their time, but they weren't just at expiry for results, they past they prime for entertainment value too, needed a new product?

I think if Jooris gets cut, he plays his way back on the team by Christmas. He's such an adaptable player.

I just hope they keep Wotherspoon around long enough to get in the 2 more pre-season games, as I think he would make a strong bid if he did. Hasn't had enough game time so far and when he did get it he was solid.
Monahan, Poirier (maybe Knight) I think were the ones Hartley referred to by those who "put one in the bank".
Will be great to watch Sean and Sven together this year if he can knock it home through the rest of camp. Seeing the two of them would be worth the price of admission alone.

I'd say I've been more tuned-in this year than the past couple. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results was just tiring me out. This year I've had so many new players to watch and analyze I've found I care less about the game than I do watching the kids and trying to guess which ones might be impact players down the road.
I will be disappointed if we end up sending most of the kids down and keeping the old farts. I totally understand and in some ways agree that you don't want to rush them, but will still be disappointed to see them go down.

Yeah, absolutely. There was no way I was going to pay attention to preseason streams the least few years. You knew it was a pointless exercise, as all the kid would be favored over the lethargic vets no matter what. Even if the regular season, the trajectory was always going to be down, no matter what the team said, so it was like being stuck in hockey purgatory.
Now there's at least some promise ahead. We may not make the playoffs for another few years, but atleast you know that the trajectory will start going up at some point again. And you have to love the energy of the young guys....it's been a long time since we've seen a team with passion to play.

If this was a previous Flames year (without the massive number of prospects and only a handful of spots), I would say that Poirier would be the surprise to make the big club. The kid probably deserves a spot over some of the current players on one-way contracts, but sending him back to dominate the Q in Gatineau is going to be the best for his career development.

Hmm maybe we should reword that and also organize the players in some manner? alphabetically or by position or something?
