A Strathcona County councillor says he is being blackmailed to not seek re-election after lewd correspondence and explicit images of him were mailed to his wife and the county’s mayor.

At a council meeting on Tuesday, Jason Gariepy admitted he had engaged in an explicit online exchange, which includes e-mails, text messages and nude photos of himself. The married father of two claims that the exchange is being used as an extortion attempt to dissuade him from seeking re-election.
Same councillor who had his computer taken away by his council a couple of years ago. I can't remember the details but he had slammed the local hospital.

I would love to see that, but it's not happening.

Many communities have bylaws prohibiting signs other than on private property before nomination day, which is Sept. 23, and they have to be down within a specified number of days after the election (10 is common). If the Calgary bylaw also prohibits that, call the bylaw department and they should be ticketed, or at least the signs will be taken down.

I'm fairly certain that we do have something like that.

Then why are the signs up? As far as I know, all municipalities publish a candidate package with all of the rules. Early signage not only breaks the bylaw but also offends voters, so it's a bad idea.

So you are saying the Manning Center trained candidates have nothing to offer except svhill for developers?

Anything objective you can point to on that?

Just ignore him. He's a one issue kind of guy. I am not a Manning Center supporter, but I disagree that the only issue is the developer levy. SebC just has no interest in discussing anything else apparently.

No, he's not. I know him and he isn't a Manning Center candidate for sure.

With a name like Wooley, he might be sheeple, though.

Nope. I'm saying that the question is good litmus test to determine who the developer shills are.

Not true. I see developer levies as the biggest issue, but not the only issue. Thanks for speaking for me though!

Anytime. You basically post this drivel at least once a week to remind us all anyway, so I figured you could take the weekend off and I'd handle it for you!

Default 2013 Calgary Municipal Election Thread (Voting Oct 21)

Anyone know anything about James Maxim in Ward 11? He's run here before, ran for the Liberals in the past, now is Manning trained and focused on fiscal issues. I'm not sure what to make of him.

Edit: he also seems extremely well financed

Of interest to those in Ward 2 - Shawn Ripley has entered the race.

He'll be a well connected contender as someone that's served on Calgary Planning Commission for 3 terms.

His slogan is dangerously close to the famous catch phrase of one Oscar Fech.

Oh and as I have a sip of coffee my brain turns on and I see it is also a clever play on the whole "Ripley's Believe it or not" stuff.

I haven't been that happy with my choices in Ward 2, but he seems like a decent possibility. Does anyone know how he voted on the Calgary Planning Commission? Also, whether he actually lives in Ward 2? His biography indicates he grew up in Paskapoo Slopes and was Cougar Ridge community association president, neither of which are even close to Ward 2. If he doesn't live here I'll have a hard time voting for him.

Must be just starting. The email on his website bounces back undeliverable, and the voicemail line is somebody's name with no mention of a campaign.

Im sure he would have been sued but his tag line should have been "Believe it or not"

Ripley is on twitter as @shawnripley. A check through his history gives some indication to his political leanings.

Shawn Ripley ‏@shawnripley 22 Apr 11
Looking forward to the @RandyRoyer campaign meeting today. Bringing all corners of the province together to help build the #abparty

Aside from being on the planning commission, he runs a land development consulting firm, "Ripley Development Services," and is a 3rd degree connection of mine on linked-in. Almost all my real estate connections and many of my engineering ones lead to him, which I found interesting.

Just a heads up...if you want to ask DCU any questions about her Ward before the election, make sure it's only about things she likes or supports. I asked her some questions about a cell tower project in Canyon Meadows over email and got no answers, but as soon as I asked about future plans for Shawnee Slopes I got an answer within a day! How nice of her.

Dude... seriously... Shut up. I haven't been following these CP threads particularly closely until the election ramped up, but the only posts I have ever seen you make in this forum have been quoting SebC and telling everyone not to pay attention to him because this is all he talks about. Despite the fact that at least he has offered an opinion that's supported by an actual argument.

If he is a one-issue poster and the issue is developers' interests, you are a one-issue poster and your issue is "bitching about SebC's posts".
