@jprutherford: #stlblues announce they have signed Alex Pietrangelo. It's a seven-year contract worth $6.5 million per year.

No surprises here. He was always going to get a long term deal.

Great deal for both parties. Good to see he didn't force them to pay the 7+ some were saying.

No kidding, they got him long term for very cap-friendly money.

Expensive tandom, J-Bo and Piets. One is Team Canada bound, and it's possible both of them are.

It's a win win contract for both sides. Piets probably could have demanded more, but 6.5m per buys at least a few Lambos

Huh, I was sure it was going to be something like 50/8. Still fair to both sides assuming he keeps up as he's been.

Thought he would have held out for more, and for the full 8 year max. Good deal for the Blues.

I think it's fair for both sides.

I don't like long term deals because the team takes all the risk.

If a player wants 7 or 8 years, they should accept a little less money for the security.

This is pretty much a perfect deal for him, IMO.

I know Letang would have been UFA so it changes things, but if he can get a 58M contract then Pietrangelo on a 7 year contract under 50M is golden. Same contract Karlsson got last year so it's not completely unfair but I think the Blues made out a little better.

I wouldn't say all the risk. Definitely a lot but Pietrangelo is giving up 3 years of UFA in his prime, he'll now be over 30 when the contract expires. It's not a perfect comparison because of the new CBA preventing long term contracts but Weber was able to sign his 110M contract as he was just entering his prime. Same with Suter and his 100M contract. Both of these players making well over 10M as 28 year olds. Pietrangelo will only being making 7M, which is half what Weber's salary is today.

Pietrangelo may have been better off financially fighting for a 4 or 5 year contract and asking for the moon as a 27 year old. And if Letang can get a 58M contract as a 27 year old prior to hitting UFA, what could someone like Pietrangelo make even with the new CBA rules?

Huh...am I the only one that thinks he will be JayBo 2.0? I think he's talented offensively, but I don't think he's a top 10 defender in the league or anything. Oh well, someone was going to pay him those dollars.

Agreed. Letang is not that good.
