some really good albums have been released so far this year ... the ones I bought:

Amon Amarth - Deceiver of the Gods
Not as good as their last couple efforts but still very good. Also a very good live band, I saw them in June.

Avenged Sevenfold - Hail to the King
Already discussed here in the thread ... I definitely liked it more than "Nightmare", even if their are some songs on there that are pretty much rip-offs from Metallica and Iron Maiden ("This Means War" should be called "Sad But True 2" ). Just another album that shows that Synyster Gates is a freaking genius.

SOiL - Whole
Not really metal, but still very happy that SOiL are back with their original lineup! Ryan McCombs re-joins the band after a stint with Drowning Pool ... really glad because the two albums after McCombs' departure were absolutely horrible. "Whole" sounds like "old" SOiL.

Meshuggah - Koloss
A 2012 release but absolutely fantastic.

"Yes, and if by 'bass' you mean 'Stupid amounts of side-chain compression.' "

Great Thread,

I met a guy recently and we got to talking and it happens he's in a local band with a new album coming out. Just had a chance to finally listen to it here tonight from their website and it's not bad.

I know this album came out last year but Testament's "Dark Roots of Earth" is pretty good. I took me a few listens to get into it but I like it a lot.

Chuck Billy is still one of the greatest metal vocalists alive, even after the cancer. The Gathering is one of the most perfect albums I've ever listened to

They're coming here again as well on Nov. 15, 2013. It's a Friday too, I might just go to that.

So Metallica was on The Colbert Report on Tuesday night. They did a pretty funny interview, but what I was interested in is what song they were going to play. I figured it would be something recent off of Death Magnetic, but nope they busted out a couple of classics

I really enjoyed that Noctis. Shame it was the last.

Highlights for me were Candlemass, Witch Mountain, Sacrifice, Possessed and Gorguts.

Candlemass, Sacrifice and Possessed were great as well. Didn't care for Witch Mountain all that much. A bit too hipster/barista for me. How was the Friday night at Mac Hall? I just did the Saturday show. I would have loved to have seen Gorguts.

Friday was good, nowhere near as good as Saturday though. I got back from Vegas really early Friday morning so I missed Blashphemy, and showed up late so I missed Dire Omen and Villanizer. From what I saw;

Barbatos - put on a good show, pretty decent blackened thrash. Probably won't go searching for their material though.

Pagan Alter - These guys were rad. I enjoyed their set, vocals were definitely top notch. They had a few issues with their set (guitar player messing up, had to restart a few sets), so that was disapointing. They blamed it on having no sleep because another band had partied the night before; still a great band to check out.

Gorguts - Gorguts was incredible. These guys can really play - I was really stoked when they finished with Obscura, one of my favourite DM tracks. I really hope these guys come back to Calgary and can play a full set.

Revenge - Sound quality was terrible. Just an absolute wall of drums and I couldn't make out the guitars very well. I ended up leaving in their set.

I found that the sound quality on Saturday was much better than the Friday - not sure why though. I kind of wished I stayed for Blasphemy, but I couldn't stay awake any longer.

Metal Evolution IndieGoGo for the extreme metal episode is doing okay, but could use a last push.

So how about giving six bucks to a good documentary maker? (Also, if you haven't seen the other episodes of Metal Evolution, you should. Available in the internet.)

Sad news.

Jan Kuehnemund, the guitarist and founder member of pioneering all-girl rockers Vixen, died yesterday (Thursday 10 October) after a long battle with cancer.

and just when you though that it impossible to have less respect for Lars Ulrich:

http://www.metalinjection.net/shocki...-beliebers-yes

Quote:
Last week, we posted that video of Justin Bieber humming the solo to Metallica's "Fade To Black" and there was mass amounts of butthurt. Metallica themselves were interviewed recently, and I guess the story got back to the interviewer, because they asked Metallica about Bieber, and shocker…
James Hetfield says:
"Are we Beliebers? Yes."
Now obviously, James' tone did not come through in the response. He could've meant it sincerely and he could've been sarcastic about it. Lars Ulrich gave more serious answer:
"Is it possible to have respect for him without being a Belieber? I think the kid's really talented and obviously to go through what he's going through at that early age must be a mind####. So the fact that he still goes out there and does it, I admire that and I think he's super talented, so I guess I am kind of a Belieber. If he likes 'One', and Liam Gallagher likes him, OK, there you go."

Anyone else go to Slayer last night? Gojira rocked, I really like that band. The sound for Slayer was TERRIBLE. They had Holt and King's guitars coming out of stage left or stage right, you could barely stand anywhere and hear both guitars. Pretty disappointing. I was really looking forward to Holt's take on the solos. It sucked to watch King hit his solo for five seconds, go rhythm and go again to a solo, without hearing Hanneman's work.
