Tony Gallagher: Sedins to Extend With Canucks
Via "The Province":
Quote:
Henrik Sedin gave something of a brief outline of the way the contract extension negotiations between he, his brother Daniel, and the Canucks are proceeding, indicating that their Calgary-based agent J.P. Barry is talking about a deal that would see them finish their NHL careers here in Vancouver.
You can read length of term into that, likely meaning they are trying for a three-year deal at the very least and perhaps more, the club probably more focused on a lesser length.
“We’ve had one meeting and talks are going to continue through training camp and we’ll see what happens,” said Henrik, with Daniel sitting right beside him on a podium erected by the team. “Hopefully we can get something that would see us finish our careers here in Vancouver.”
“We want to stay, everyone knows that, so we’ll see what happens,” added Daniel.
The twins are entering the final year of their contract, which calls for each of them to make $6.1 million per season, and it is expected they will take a cut going forward, how much of one obviously a significant part of the discussion as well.
Sounds like both parties would like to have it out of the way by the time the season begins Oct. 3.

Looks like they're sticking around.

Are they really going to take a pay cut or is that just wishful thinking on the part of the Canucks fanbase?
Keep hearing fans expecting them to sign for under $6 when they should really be getting $7 plus based on their past results.

The Sedins could score bigger dollars on the market. Anything less than $6 mil / year is a great deal.
That said, I hope they get 8-year contracts with a NMC. Keep them making 20% of the payroll until their 40.

If they leave Vancouver might get a couple of players with a real desire to win to replace them. I hope they're Canucks for life

The contract doesn't even come into play until they are 34, if they are asking for more than 3 years anything over 6M could easily become an albatross. At least in my opinion. They are good, but it was 3 seasons ago they last put up over a point-per-game average, who knows how they will be playing when they are 37.
However, as a Flames fan I hope they grab every cent they can from Vancouver if they intend to stay.

Aging Sedins signed long term + new up and coming prospect base and a good team likely within 3 years = Good time for Flames Fans

I have no idea which way I want to go on this. In any case, it would be interesting to see how they'd do under a coach who wouldn't be afraid to bench them and not feed them O-zone starts disproportionately.

It'll be nice to see the Canucks hang on to the aging Sedins.
After all the flack they gave us for holding on to Iggy/Kipper for too long, I can't wait to see that team decline.

You need to separate team management from fans.

Good point, it'll be good to see their management make the same mistakes as ours.

Henrik is the highest scoring (pt getter) in the league since 2009. Haven't verified that but it is reasonable. But I believe they are the decline and can't see them getting more than 3 years in the 6ish range. Maybe even 5ish. Anymore than that and I would seriously consider letting them walk.

That remains to be seen. I don't have much faith in Gillis, though.

Why wouldn't you feed them offensive starts? Doesn't it make sense to start your top scorers in the the offensive zone?

I hope this ends up being an albatross. The Canucks segwayed from Bertuzzi, Naslund and Morris to the Sedins and Kesler and have been one of the best teams not to win the cup for years hopefully their luck has run out and the Sedins hang around, retire and don't leave them any picks.

I disagree. Except for the year where they went to the Cup, I don't think the Canucks were all that great. They got their ass handed to them by Chicago two straight years not only because the Blackhawks were better, but because the Canucks had shaky goaltending, a slow defense, and poor scoring depth. In the last two seasons they couldn't score and their top 4 pretty much consists of guys who are 2nd pairing guys after Ehrhoff left. Winning in the regular season doesn't count for all that much when you easily get swept aside by other teams in the playoffs.

Oh please, sign them to big money and long-term deals.
Their point production is about to fall off the cliff in Tortorella's defensive system.
Torts can kill the scoring production of anyone. Brad Richards, Drury, Naslund, Nash, Gaborik....

Iginla is 36 years-old and over a decade removed from his Art Ross Trophy winning days, and he was still able to get $6 million.
The Sedins will definitely be leaving money on the table if they sign for less than $6 million, even on long-term deals.
