The chances that this turns out to be a good contract for Philly are pretty remote - that is completely unnecessary term and dollars. And an NTC? Wow.

I just went to Capgeek to look at the Flyers and realized that this isn't a real contract yet. So far all Cleary has officially signed is a PTO with the Flyers and supposedly the PTO will transition into this contract at the end of the month.
Since it is not a sure thing, the Flyers can still back out if they see him in camp and realize that he really isn't a $2.75M kind of guy at the age of 34 (and definitely not going to be worth that amount in 2 or 3 years from now).
I do think that with all of the youth on the Flyers roster that adding a guy like Cleary is a great move. Cleary has been a "winner" with the Red Wings for such a long time that Holmgren is probably expecting that to rub off onto the rest of the Flyers by simply having Cleary in the room.

The Flyers could have signed Damien Brunner for a lot less.
Chances are more teams would want Cleary than would want Brunner.

What a strange contract. Nothing against Cleary, but that's too much money, for too long, and with a NTC to boot.

If true this makes a lot more sense. Apparently Gagne is also on a PTO so the pressure is on for a few boys in Philly!
Cleary won't have trouble finding a team if he has to move on, but definitely won't find that money elsewhere.

After all this time and changes, their goaltending still looks to be a mess.

Money and term seem steep, good thing Pronger is on the LTIR or else this move would be absolutely crazy.

If Pronger were on that team, they'd be scary good. It's too bad he's injured because he's one of the best defensmen the NHL has ever seen. I'm sure if the flyers could get him in the lineup, they'd gladly pay his salary. Him being on LTIR is probably the only reason they're making this move because they want that veteran leadership that's won cup

They might be better with him in the line up as any team would, but I doubt they would be "scary good". This is a team we are talking about that was in the mix to draft higher than the Flames at the end of last season

I've had a night to sleep on it, and I still can't wrap my head around this. More then 2 months since free agency started...in what freaking world was the demand for Dan Cleary so high 2 months later that Hololgrem needed to include a NTC? Not to mention, his team is already over the cap and defense/goaltending should be their main priority. I just don't understand.

Holmgren is going down the path of Sutter. Used to be considered a great GM. Is now losing his mind.

Yeah, it was a valiant attempt to fix his goaltending situation while dealing with the career ending injury to the player he was building the team around.
He now seems to have jumped the shark, Darryl Sutter style.

@FriedgeHNIC: Not exactly sure why, but it appears as if there is some complication between Daniel Cleary and PHI. Told he will not be joining Flyers.

Unbelievable that they dodged this bullet.
Holmgren must have heard the outcry.

I think this was a ploy from Cleary to stay in detroit...

Eklund trolling for the sake of trolling methinks. If anyone is offering Cleary a better deal than that there is only one explaination: It's Kevin Lowe.
