I know it was unrealistic expectations, but I was disappointed that he didn't have a couple of multiple point games during the prospects tournament. I just so badly want him to far surpass anybody's expectations that I'm expecting too much from him.

I haven't been paying super close attention, but has Monahan scored a goal each time he's played a "game" in a Flames jersey so far? Every time I check he seems to have chipped in.

No he scored against Edmonton and Vancouver, but not against San Jose or the Dinos.

the goal was credited to Smoskowitz, I do think Monahan had an assist on the goal though.

This thread makes me marvel at the many methods of communication the human race has created for itself.

I seriously wonder if Sean reads this thread. I'd love to see the look on his face if he did.

I think people need to relax. 1 he is 18 and most the players at the young stars tourney were older. 2 the way he plays isn't supposed to be a flashy all offensive type of player. His game isn't going to wow you but that doesn't mean he doesn't have star potential
If anything Baertschi should be getting the most slack on here based on how he played at the young stars tourney. But I'm not worried about him either. He will step it up in the pre season and regular season

If he read this thread, I would be a little embarrassed for some posters on here.

Agreed, Baertschi didn't look great in the Dinos game, although he turned it on in a few spurts and showed he could control the play when he wants to. If I was the Flames brass i would be giving him an earful. Nothing is a given now on this team, even Sven Baertschi. If he can't look heads and shoulders above the rest in an intersquad university game, even without putting much effort in, he's not preparing himself properly. You should always be going hard.
Although to be fair, he was getting a rough ride from the Dinos. Quite a few cheap shots were given to him and the coaches may have been concerned he might get hurt. Kanzig was looking for a piece of ayone that came near him. They must have agreed on no fighting, because the Dinos were definitely taking some liberties. I was saying to my buddy that if I was Kanzig I'd be yelling up to Burke "Can I go him?! Can I go him!?"

Baertschi shouldn't play well or try at all. These are just conditioning stints for him at most.
Why should he give 100% against a bunch of scrubs when he's a lock to make the team? Save it for training camp and the season. The last thing I want is for him to get a concussion from some no name wannabe U of C Dino

Does the ECHL have the same rule regarding under-20 CHL players that the AHL does?
Because that might be a better option than sending some kids back to juniors.

Oh I agree, and I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches told him to kind of keep a low profile. But you can still do that and work hard, Sven looked to be coasting a bunch out there which I didn't really like to see. I understand it, I just think if they were really that concerned with him being hurt (and judging from the treatment he received from the Dinos, they should have been) they should have just held him out of the game.

It's not an AHL or ECHL rule, it's an agreement between the NHL and the CHL.
An NHL team can't send a player drafted out of the CHL to any league other than NHL without first offering him back to his CHL club. In theory, the CHL club could refuse the player and allow him to be sent to the AHL or ECHL, but I don't think that has ever happened.

I think Monahan looks solid and will develop into an important contributor, but in a quietly unimpressive style.
