I have to ask but some of these posts have 5 youngsters making the team. How are they going to fit?

Trades are not going to be easy with the cap going down. If the flames did make a trade there is more chance that they would be taking back a roster player with salary, rather than trading roster player for prospect.

None of the guys possibly dealt are going to be expensive.

I can see Feaster dealing a couple younger guys who arent going to make the club for a bonafide NHLer in the 25-28 year old range who costs to much for his particular club and a decent pick....Flames can absorb any contract in the league right now.

The mix on this team is still atrocious.

There are essentially 2 spots up for grabs up front, and I think we all agree that Baertschi takes one of them. That means there is really only one spot on forward. My money is on Horak taking it. Every other forward plays in Abbotsford or back in Junior this season.

On the back end, the way I see it, there are no spots available, so there will be very little competition there.

The roster is basically already done. The line they play on is the only real mystery here.

Cammalleri
Backlund
Jones
Glencross
Stajan
Stempniak
Hudler
Galiardi
McGrattan
Jackman

This group is as much a sure thing as you're going to get. That's 10 guys for 12 forward spots. One-way deals across the board.

Same goes on the back.

Giordano
Wideman
Butler
Russell
Brodie
O'Brien
Smith

Seven guys with one-way deals. Kids aren't making this lineup.

Typically 14 forward spots, 7 D, 2 G for the 23 roster spots, so you have a little more wiggle room than you show there

Hate to burst bubbles, but there are too many capable veterans to be displaced. I would be surprised if anyone other than the bolded players had a chance to make the team out of camp.

That being said, the roster might look very different at the end of the year with the expiring contracts of Cammalleri, Stempniak, Stajan, Galiardi, Jackman, Butler, Russell, and McDonald.

Cammalleri-Backlund-Hudler
Glencross-Stajan-Stempniak
Baertschi-Reinhart-Jones
Galiardi-Knight-Jackman
McGrattan

Brodie-Giordano
Wideman-Butler
Ramage-O'Brien
Cundari

Ramo-McDonald

Fair enough, but I'm working under the understanding that these are the playable spots.

You may be able to carry 23, but you don't play 23 on a nightly basis. If the kids are going to make this lineup, I want them in the lineup, not watching fromt he press box, and I don't see Calgary paying veterans on one way deals to ride the pine... so like I said, there's not a lot of wiggle room here, IMO.

I'd love to be proven wrong though!

New Era takes the cake. Not only are you adding 5 youngsters, you have the flames keeping 3 goaltenders.

It has to be one or the other, though. Either veterans on the bench, freeing up game time for youngsters or youngsters getting big league experience in practice until they are ready to play. Best case in my opinion is you rotate that spot and make sure everyone gets playing time somewhat regularly. Plus there are always injuries to account for, opening more spots.

What happened to Jones? There is no chance anybody is trading for that contract.

I think Monahan will make the team. But I also think he will get sent down before 9 games, and I'm kind of uneasy about that. Yes it would be nice to save that entry-level year, but what kind of message does it send to the kids if they come in and earn a spot, only to be sent down because of money issues? I think if he earns a spot and deserves to stay up, he should stay the full year (like Jordan Stahl did with Pittsburgh, who went on to have an amazing rookie season).

On the other hand, I get why some people want him sent down. Were not contenders next season or after, and having that extra ELC year might mean the difference between adding that extra player who might put us over the edge once the time is right. Tough decision for management to make. But these are the kinds of problems I'm glad the team has now.

Pretty much nailed it. It's fun to think "oh hey it would be cool if this guy or that guy made it!" but you're looking at 2 forward spots.

You maybe add one if they let Jackman ride.
MAYBE add a spot on D if Russell or Smith rides.

But no, there is no scenario where it's Baertschi, Horak, and multiple other guys. It's those two, maybe Reinhart or Bouma, and a cup of coffee for one of the D.

They really have to ship some of these guys out, I have no interest in watching half the team.

I liked what i saw from Monahan in the rookie tourny, but he did not look ready for the NHL. I would also add that he needs to bring more in camp to even get his 9 game trial.

I think management will make a point of giving the youngsters every chance to replace any of the vets that are on there (otherwise why would they have stated such as their approach during development camp?), but realistically I see up to 4 guys making the jump.

If a few guys look good enough to make the team though, then Feaster will find a way to make it work. Whether through trade, waivers, whatever.

Though I do agree that at this moment we have too many roster players for a team going into its first year of a rebuild phase. Russel and O'Brien acquisitions particularly were not necessary IMO... I hope they prove me wrong. Maybe Jay can trade 2 cheap contracts for a higher $ player whom we can afford to bring in right now because of our ample cap space.

Barring injury I think that Beartschi and maybe Horak make the team out of camp along with Ramo in net. No rookie Dmen. The 7 1-way contracts on D are all going to start the year with the big team.

People need to account for possible trades that may occur between now and puck drop on the season. One or two one-way contracts could be moved if they feel it necessary.

Otherwise that would implicate that they've been lying to the public and the kids about giving them an honest chance. Doesn't sound like something this management group would do, especially with the state of the team. If vets have to be unloaded, they will be.
