Kipper is truly a Flames legend, and I'll miss having a mind-bendingly athletic goaltender, as opposed to a robotic technical goalie. He was as entertaining to watch as he was good in his prime.

Not that any fans actually paid heed to the excessive rants Eric Francis made on Sportsnet960 The Fan during the summer, and in this unfair Calgary Sun article ( http://www.calgarysun.com/2013/06/25...-fan-favourite ), but Jay Feaster actually made it a point to call out Eric Francis on Sportsnet960 The Fan today (approx. 5pm). Feaster made a pointed remark, and I paraphrase, about a certain media member who wrote about how Kipper should have made it clear with the Flames about his intentions on retirement.
In fact in the article linked above, Francis concludes,
Quote:
The right thing to do was come clean long ago with his intentions, stop stringing fans along
Feaster took it upon himself to clear the air, and placed Kipper in a good light, by completely taking responsibility for Kipper "taking his time". Feaster stated that the atmosphere around the team was chaotic at the time, and the team was essentially in a state of flux with all the trades, losing out on a playoff spot etc. Kipper had mentioned he would like to retire at the end of the season at the time to management. Jay went on to say it was the Flames management group that advised Kipper to take his time, and make sure he was making the correct decision. The plan was to continue to check in on Kipper's thoughts over the course of the remainder of the season and into the summer. Flames management wanted to ensure that Kipper wasn't simply retiring due to the state of the current Flames incarnation, and that he was genuinely making the right decision for him and his family. It was the Flames management way of saying thanks to a longtime Flames player that deserved it. Again I am paraphrasing what Feaster said, and I am not projecting my own sentiments upon this situation, in fact, I am not the type of person to really rail on anyone, even someone as notoriously unabashed as Francis. However, I definitely admire how Feaster took it upon himself to clear the air, and aimed directly at an article that was written without looking from all angles at a situation regarding a true Flames legend. I think it's important for all Flames fans to know what Feaster stated, and a bit of the story as to why Kipper took his time.

319 wins good for 23rd on the all time list. He has a similar amount wins to Sean Burke (324), Olaf Kolzig (303) neither of whom are in the HOF. Although Kipper reached 300+ in considerably less GP than those 2. He has slightly less than Harry Lumely (330) who is in the HOF, however Lumely has won a Stanley Cup, has more All-star appearances, while both have won 1 Vezina. (Kolzig has also won a Vezina, Burke has not). Billy Smith, in the HOF, also has a similar number of wins (305) and one Vezina, but has 4 Cups and a Conn Smythe.

Kipper's 44 Shutouts are good for 30th all-time, Dryden is close with 46 and Parent with 54, but both of those guys have MULTIPLE Cups and Vezina's and played in an incomparable era.

His .912 Save% and GAA of 2.49 and is actually the best of the 4 most recent inductees (although Brodeur's will be better, depending on how this season goes) but you have to take into account that Smith, Fuhr, Roy and Belfour also played in the high scoring 80's.

It's tough to gauge what it'll take to get in now because it's damn near impossible to compare goalies from different era's. I like to hope he'll get in, but he definitely won't be 1st ballot and I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't get in. You have to remember there are only 33 goalies in the HOF (34 with Brodeur). Is Kipper one of the top 35 goalies of ALL-TIME?

Count Mike Vernon a fan.

“The thing about goaltending today,” says the Calgary Flames’ 1989 Stanley Cup netminding ace, “is that they’re all going for these big guys, they go down in the butterfly so much and then the puck hits them. They just block.

“To me, they don’t use their tools. They don’t use their gloves enough, their pads, things like that. But you look at Miikka Kiprusoff, he’s a guy who uses his tools. Uses his glove, his stick. Plays the puck extremely well. And he competes in there, never quits.

“I like the acrobatic goaltending because I think it’s more of a skill. The other system is just get down in the butterfly, slide, let the puck hit you . .

“I just don’t view that as being on the same skill level. Kiprusoff. Jonathan Quick in L.A. Even the guy here with Detroit (Jimmy Howard). Not a big man, but he uses his skill. Use your quickness, your reflexes. It’s exciting. It’s athletic. That’s all part and parcel of it.

“As a fan, those are the kinds of guys I enjoy watching.”

I can't say how many great saves i've witnessed in person by Kipper that made my hair stand up on the back of my neck. Often, he was worth the price of admission alone. Also, the confidence you could have knowing that Kipper was in net. Thanks for all the amazing memories and great play night in and night out!

Nothing but respect for Kipper, one of those goalies I knew was going to rob the oilers blind game after game. He can now sit on his fishing boat and drink and smoke to his hearts content!

Couldn't be bothered to see if it's been mentioned, but with Kipper's retirement the Flames have the second lowest cap number in the league, behind only the Isles.

I've kind of been softened to the fact that he might be retiring. But it still doesn't make it any easier knowing I'll never get to see him play again.

Now that that door's closed, I can't wait to see who walks through the door next. I mean, between Ramo, Berra, Ortio, Brossoit and Gillies, one of them has to work out, right?

Congrats Kipper!

He was the best goalie for the Flames and pretty much turned around the Flames fortunes by himself. Damn shame he couldn't win a cup here and he lost 2 years because of lockouts -- he would have had probably 60 more wins, etc.

Enjoy retirement!

I wonder if he will be involved in hockey in the future, as a coach, goalie coach, or scout, etc

Not a bad collection. Personally, I still think Gillies will be our 'tender of the future. I have more confidence in Ortio than I had previously to the Penticton tournament. I can't wait to see how the goaltending positions break down at main camp.
