When he was at his peak, he was as good as anyone who has ever played the game. Though it didnt last as long as some of the others, his abilities were other worldly.
The best goaltender we've ever had in this city. He was a treat to watch, even when the team was floundering, he was generally a shining bright spot giving his all to stop anything from getting past him. Some truely remarkable saves and full games.
I'll never forget them playing the Canucks in 04 (game 6 i think?). My family and I were huddled around this 20 inch tv with rabbit ears at the place we were staying at. The flames went down 4-0 early and then Kipper just decided that nothing else would get past him. The Flames went on to force OT, of which there was 3, and although the Flames ultimately lost, it was a hell of a game.
Wow, this is hard to believe. It's going to be tough without Kipper.

Should have won the Conne Smythe in the Flames losing effort IMO. Some of the games he stole during that run were out of control. 40+ shots multiple times.

Moments of Miikka's Career (among the hundreds) that I will never forget:
1) Going out in style. His final game, a 2-1 win over Anaheim. A moment that goes down as one of the best at the Dome.
2) Game 6 against Detroit in '04. A 1-0 win in OT. Both him and Joseph put on a clinic that I will never forget.
3) His first game against Montreal. a 6-5 win where he wore white pads and a white mask. It would have been 10-6 without him. We knew that there was something special.
4) Hundreds and hundreds of saves that made us all say 'WOW', and chant 'KIPPER! KIPPER!'.
I know there is almost a 0% chance he reads this, but THANK YOU KIPPER for all the amazing moments. You were loved and adored by every single fan that came into the dome, regardless of who they cheered for. Even Oiler and Canuck fans knew how special you were between the pipes.

In the Flames 33 year history, how many years did we really have a true number one goalie outside of the Kipper years, where we knew going in . Probably the middle 5-6 years of Vernon, 8.5 years of Kiprusoff. Maybe a couple years of Lemelin counted. Maybe a season or two of Turek counted.
That leaves a good 15 years, where we were just kind of winging it with goalie tandems, or goalie by committees. I hope one of our prospects can turn into a solid long term number 1 goalie. Seems to be the number one block that needs to be established first before anything.

I think we might be going by committee again for a while. My money's on Gilles to be the next true #1... but Brossoit could be a pleasant surprise.
