Team has looked really good. Can you imagine if we had Jankowski, Gaudreau, and Gillies here too. Future's looking not terrible.

Roy has the ability to hit. Hopefully that rounds out a bit in the next few years. I could see him going the "large, checking M-A Bergeron" route, which would be excellent given where he was drafted.

Would like to see Ramage get a cup of coffee with the big club to see how he handles himself. Liked his play, a lot.

Just got back from the game. Some points:

-Lots of Flames fans there...nice to see

-Flames had a lot of trouble with the canucks speed and in-your-face forecheck style...until they scored to tie the game 1-1. After that they seemed more ready to play at a fast pace and made decisions quicker.

-Joni Ortio had a stellar game. Hard to not be impressed.

-Sean Monahan is a smart player but lacks foot speed and didn't seem to separate himself from the pack at any point. Hopefully his explosiveness still is to come

-Sven Baertschi is really coming across as lazy right now. He should be dominating but isn't coming close - he really doesn't seem to be going HAM right now. One nice pass to set up a chance but a couple lazy plays in his own zone.

-Didn't really witness any high end skill for either side...though the Flames have some really sound, smart players who are going to be valuable role players in the NHL. Emphasis on hockey sense is really showing now.

-Hunter Shinkaruk is nothing special. Going to be a prototypical canuck though...you can tell a lot of guys on the ice dislike him. Jensen is probably the best canuck right now, with Corrado. Both very solid.

Really? What makes you say that? Pretty lofty comparison to two damn good NHL captains who were pretty far ahead of horvat developmentally at similar stages in their career (iirc).

Just thought I'd mention if you missed the game or want to see it again, there are some youtube links in the video section of the canucks website that will allow you to watch the complete game, separated into periods. Hate the canucks, but their website is actually pretty well run.

That was a fun game. The SOEC is a great venue too. Shame it had so many empty seats, but the scheduling is maybe party to blame.

My thoughts on the game:

Impressive were Ortio, Subban, and Corrado.

Ramage, Ferland, Jooris, and EIson looked good for the Flames too. Knight and Poirier had some flashes. No one on D particularly impressed.

On the whole it was a fun game, with few standouts. Flames need a lot of improvement on their teamwork as this could have been over early.

Think I might check out the Jets & Sharks tomorrow for 12 bucks.

Edit: Oh, and Granlund looked very poised too. He'll get some time in Calgary this fall.

Horvat is a 3rd line NHLer, I'd find it remarkable if he became more than that. A more accurate comparison would be Stephane Yelle with even less offensive upside. He'll likely help a team as a key role player, but he'll never lead a team or have anywhere near the impact Richards or Landeskog does.

Wow, I just watched the highlights on the flames site. Looks like Ortio played like a boss. Made a lot of 2nd, 3rd, 4th shots.

I seem to remember some posters on here nearly writing him off last year - Looks like he has it in him to win games at the very least.

Only caught a sliver of it, but I heard Ortio was godly. Kipper-esque. Very interesting. I'd love to see him come out of nowhere and push his way into the big team goal conversation. The door is basically open right now anyways, who's to say Ramo is actually ahead of the others until he proves it.

Was cool to see Roy notch 2 points in his first game. Seems like a pretty offensive minded d-man.

Again, I'm amazed at Monahan's consistency. Probably due to his smarts and ability to put himself in places to succeed. Sucks to hear that his skating is still being perceived as poor. I know we all want him to look all-worldly out there, but just look at what Sven is doing. I think it'll be a better test and much more telling when actual camp starts.

Really glad to watch Roy have a great game. It didn't hurt being paired with Ramage, that guy plays like a seasoned pro. Roy looked hesitant in the earlier rookie camp but he looked involved tonight. He was a little awkward at times and got his legs tangled but he just needs to grow into his body.

From my view I thought Hanowski played well and was aggressive on the puck. Great game by Ferland as well, so composed. I thought of teasing Canuck fans and telling them it was really Kipper in goal for us.

On both of those huge saves, Ortio looks a lot like Kipper. Those Fins are pretty damn quick and flexible

what a great game tonight!!!!

here are some pics....

like i already said - what a great game!!!

not only did the flames win, but we got to meet some fellow cp-ers this evening.... which i love doing!

we also had a little fun sitting behind the nucks goalie. whenever he'd do the most routine thing - like stop the puck behind the net, we'd "LUUUUUUUUUUU!" eventually one of the guys in our group piped up, "do you see how stupid this sounds!!" ha! ha! (we even had canuck fans laughing)

after the game we got to meet Penner, Roy and Ferland - nice kids.

Kanzig walked by us - holy crap that kid is HUGE.... not just tall, but MASSIVELY HUGE!!!

had a chance to talk with Rob Kerr - that was pretty cool. He is a walking encyclopedia of hockey knowledge. it was too bad he had to leave becuz i would have loved to talk more with him. he said that he'd be more than happy to chat more on sat/sun if i can find him... challenge accepted!!!!

i know this thread is about today's flames game, but the early game this afternoon - jets/sharks - was AWESOME!! i'd say the best so far.(and not just becuz of the fights). i'm really looking forward to the flames/sharks game on sunday. too bad the flames don't get to play the jets, that would be a great game too. the jets are soooo physical. they hit, hit, hit and then hit some more!

watch Ferland's fight at 20:07, I think this guy may be a power forward in the making. I've always hoped that one of Bouma or Ferland will crack the top 6 so that Gaudreau and Baertschi can benefit from their physical presence. At the moment Ferland seems to be the one better suited for this role, bringing both skill and physical abilities (btw. he's now listed at 6'2 - 215 on the Flames website, that fits perfectly to the Burke's big team)

At this point, I'd like to see Ramage slot in one of the 5-6 d-man spots over Russell or O'Brien.

Not going to happen, and no need to rush him. He'll be there soon enough, no need to throw him onto a bad Flames team too early. It's great to see him play well, but he needs a bit more seasoning yet.

I imagine Ramage will play a handful of NHL games this season. Being a righty and due to his style of play, he brings elements to the table that are in short supply in our D group. But I expect Abbotsford to get the bulk of this playing time.
