As is the case every year, the demo seems great. It is usually due to the sudden feel of a new game that brings on the excitement. then the tuners come out, and completely dumb down the game so it's basically the same as th year past.
i like the slight enhancements in skating this year, i like that hitting is back. What i am unpleased about is:
- there are bone crushing hits all over the ice, and not enough simple hits that may not completely destroy the offensive player, but simply do enough to seperate the man and the puck.
- too many fights. big hits, any shot post whistle automatically results in a fight, and hte user is not given the option on whether to fight or not. There are also no instigator penalties for this.
- speaking of penalties, i played about 6 games today, and was awarded a PP just once. Hope penalties is fixed this year!

Sliders will take care of pretty much every concern you've mentioned, so that's definitely a good sign. I'm stoked to play it when I get home.

Big hits at every turn. Way too easy to score. Still figuring out the one touch deke. The change for fighting looks alright on the first try. Absolutely split Hossa in 10 pieces with a hit from Chara and Bickel came to the rescue and knocked me out.

Hmmmm. Anybody who has been following this thread knows I'm a big EA supporter for this series, but based off the demo I'm not totally sold. The changes they've made are incredibly welcome, but they are so hard to notice that I'm wondering if it's worth a $60 upgrade.
I love the little things. Players try to position for tips, they turn their bodies to accept passes, they work harder to stay onside, and the fighting feels awesome. Beyond that I can't say I noticed much difference at all.
What's concerning to me is that some of the other changes felt like they could be steps back. The instigator aspect of it all was pretty cool but I'm hoping it can be toned way down. I had several totally clean hits that resulted in unavoidable fights. I assume (hope) this can be dialled back with sliders as it's one of my least favourite parts of the real game. The hitting as well looks great (albeit set too high for the demo), but I'm not sure I'm sold on it being removed from the stick. It's generally pretty good at determining what should be a hit and what shouldn't, but there were about 4 interference penalties where I was just trying to skate around a guy and he shifted to get in front of me. Perhaps if you tone down the hitting slider these wouldn't get called.
It's odd because it feels like such a great game, but I really don't know if I'm going to pick this one up. I haven't skipped a single one of these since 2001, but for the first time I find myself questioning the necessity. Generally when people get on EA about doing tiny upgrades I defend them because even when the upgrades are subtle, they impact the gameplay greatly in my opinion. I'm not sure I'm seeing that here.
I'll give it a few more periods and see where I'm at, but right now my 2013 (established) seasons are looking a little more appealing.

as far as i know, the right stick still does hits, it hasn't been removed ..
In fact when I was playing yesterday the only times I had hits seemed to be when i used the right stick, didn't even realize/try to just skate into the player.
I agree the hitting seems to be way too much right now, and I hope they make the fights from big hits a lot less, and really only in cases where you hit the guy who wasn't near the puck.

Right-stick hitting controls remain unchanged, but now players can deliver a big hit with only the left stick simply by skating into their opponents with speed.

I like the skating improvements and the vision control improvements, much better than in 13.

There must be something I'm missing here. You will throw a hit by just skating into somebody, but the right stick still hits... when you skate into somebody.

I never skated directly into the guys, i would be coming at the side and then using right stick with the direction to hit them, so I think the right stick will work for any hit that isn't a direct collision between the players

They need to remove the hitting from the right stick entirely. No more bogus penalty calls when trying to one-time a shot.

If you hold L2, you won't hit when you one-time.

getting the season ticket for the HUT benefits (they are giving out 24 HUT gold packs or something).
with no NCAA rights, i always have to create jankowski/gaudreau/gillis before starting be a gm.
I'd love to hear how anyone else sets their attributes up?

I don't know. I've played the demo and while I usually purchase the game every second year (alternate with Fifa) I'm thinking I give it a pass this time around. Certainly enhancements are present but it just seems completely like more of the same. I suspect Fifa on the PS3 and 360 will be the same as well.
Might be getting a next gen machine quicker as the next gen enhancements for Fifa seem to be a pretty big step forward.

Do you guys know if Future Shop is offering a trade in deal like they did last year?
I traded in NHL 12 and some random soccer game and got NHL 13 for free.
Do we know if anything like that exists this year?
