Hopefully this isn't a much more serious personal situation (ie. no one has heard from him and thought he was on his way to Calgary)

There is really no reason for any of the more nefarious speculation a couple have made here. I think most have the situation bang on - Howse has dropped so far down our depth chart that he's just not going to get a look.
My expectation is that this will be close to a JD Watt situation. He'll be placed on unconditional waivers (if he hasn't already) and his contract will be terminated. From there, he can either look for work in Europe or move onto his post-hockey life.

Sounds like he was one of those kids that didn't have the fire or desire. It's his life and if he didn't want to put in the work into a professional career that's his choice. Slackers come in all shapes, sizes, and careers.

Didn't someone mention in another thread that he didn't even have his drivers license? Sounds like lazy and unmotivated to me.

I am disappointed in the wild speculation in this thread.
The most likely situation is he wants out of his contract, probably think he will get a better chance elsewhere or is looking into European options.

I think you are right that he wants to try with another organization, but i highly doubt from what he has done that a European team would be interested.

Because instantly suggesting that he's a fat out of shape failure without any concern for his personal well being is usually the best way to go?

worse players than him are playing in European leagues. My guess is Germany or Switzerland.

Does anyone know what a player like Howse could expect to earn in the AHL or ECHL?, mayby it's not worth it and it's time to move on

By quoting my post which referenced none of those? Either way.. It sounds like this was a decision he's made and has shared with the Flames as opposed to simply not showing up.
Wish him all the best.

Career AHLer Ben Walter pulls in around $120k.

That's a lot higher than the average AHL salary. Howse would not command anywhere near that kind of money at this point.

Howse was slated to make $67,500 this season in the minors, coincidentally this is the first year he has no "signing bonus" of 90k. Coincidence?

Hey guys.........speculating about a player being out of shape is one thing, talking about possible substance abuse is another. Let's just assume it's not the latter and keep it out of this thread. Thanks.
Edit: And for what it's worth, I agree with others that he's probably just realized his future with the Flames is rather bleak after the prospect cupboard has been re-stocked lately and he knows his odds are slim to ever play in Calgary. He might just want to get on with other things in life.

with those saying easy on the speculation ...
also wonder if this isn't a good thing for the Flames with contract limits etc. He is on year three of his entry level contract, so the Flames haven't had to assess his validity for a contract for two plus years. the Flames may be happy he's voiding his contract and getting suspended; frees up another spot.

Absolutely - and let's face it - the kid has almost a 0 percent change of making it now. He was drafted because he had one skill in spades - hands. His skating was always a concern and then add to that ongoing conditioning issues - and here we are.
No sense paying the kid for another year, or using a roster spot on him. Best for all parties to move on.
