Watch him become a goaltending consultant and mentor for Ramo and Berra. He could even jump in on a PTO if Joey Mac and Ramo are really crapping the bed.

No PTOs in the NHL, just the AHL. I'm guessing Kiprusoff is training to see how his body feels and whether he still has the hunger to play. I won't be surprised to see him at training camp but I don't think he'll be given the #1 spot or even the #2 spot, without earning it.

I think that, or becoming an overseas scout is the only role I'd want him in currently. I've moved on from the fact that both Iggy and Kipper are gone and it's time to take a new direction. Kipper played awful last year and even if he did return to his previous form (highly unlikely) that would maybe only get this team 3 or 4 more wins next season, which will in all likelihood be the difference between coming in 29th instead of 30th. Lets give Ramo/Berra a shot and see what they can do. I love Kipper, best Flames goaltender of all time and a complete class act, but there's no reason to return, especially if he's wavering on the decision and isn't fully commited.

Too many good, young Finnish goaltenders for that I think.

I dont see why. This whole team is going to be hot garbage next season, we'll be lucky if we arent drafting in the lottery, whats the point in bringing Kipper back for that?

How do college goalies get called up on emergency basis to the big team? If it's a one-day contract, maybe one of those.

I'd love to see Kipper back and playing about 40 games. Way better way to develop the next goalie than trying to put the pressure of trying to be the full time starter in their first year. Plus, I'm not one for hoping they finish in last place. Edmonton is a good example of how losing breeds more losing. I'd much rather see us finish 10th in the conference with a young team, and use that as the baseline to build upon.

Judging by his play last season, I wouldn't make that a given. MacDonald outplayed him and we're hoping MacDonald is nothing more than our backup this season. Even Irving had slightly better stats.

Kipper's not coming back. But if he was coming back, it wouldn't be to try out for the team only to get sent down to Abbotsford. Come on.

This is what the problem would be for me. It's guaranteed that Kipper will make the team no matter what if he does not retire. He did not have a good year last year, albeit under some personal issues. I am not convinced that if he was really thinking hard about retirement that he would have kept up with his off season training like in years past. I don't see the point on having a 80% Kipper when we could use the year to figure out what they have in Ramo/Berra.
Don't get me wrong, if he has been working out full time and is 100% that is a different story. I would also want him to agree to a trade if by some miracle Ramo and Berra both show they are ready. This part is highly unlikely, so he really would not have to worry about it.
As for the poster that thinks Kipper will get them close to 10th, you are dreaming. This team is really bad on paper. Kipper and his great play would probably take them out of the bottom 3, but i am not sure that they would even get out of bottom 5.

I heard the interview and it's kind of crazy that the team doesn't have anything official from Kipper yet (unless Conny isn't supposed to disclose). Does the guy shut off all communications over the summer?

LOL Kipper. You truly walk to the beat of your own drum. If he comes back i could see him not say anything to the team and just walking in on day one of training camp, acting like its no big deal.

He's already shown he won't go to another city, he wouldn't go down to Abbotsford, he'd retire.

I suspect we're still seeing some plausible deniability on the salary cap circumvention regarding this year. Wait until the absolute last second of the off season (or maybe for the 2013-14 season to start?) before announcing the retirement.
Perhaps it's some fine print in the CBA which says something about a player being on contract during any given season? EG: If he retires during the 2012-13 season it means [X] if he retires during the 2013-14 season it means [Y].
It's obvious he's not playing this year, but there's gotta be a reason both sides are beating around the bush on the official announcement.

I would. I would be willing to drive MacDonald to the airport myself.
People are reading pretty heavily into a very shallow analysis of a shortened season where Kipper was injured and the team was playing like garbage. If Kipper shows up and says "I will play another year in Calgary, but only in Calgary" then you ship out the rental backfill goalie and make a spot for the best goalie in franchise history.
If Kipper says that he wants to come back and play with the intention of being traded to a contender, then you still ship out MacDonald and plan to promote Berra once Kipper is traded.
In no situation do I see the Flames saying no to Kipper. The only people who would actually want that are the scorched earth rebuild fans and even most of them would still rather see Kipper's career continue.

Kipper has never played well when there is a more open system in front of him, if you think this year will be any different you are fooling yourself

Unless there really is a reason both sides are keeping this quiet or something out of the ordinary going on in Kipper's personal life, this whole, "Kipper's just a strange guy, walk to the beat of his own drum, blah, blah....." is really annoying.
Guess it doesn't matter this year, not like we need the cap space to land a key piece, and maybe Kipper wouldn't hold out this long if we did, but frick, I get he has to take his time and figure it out for him, but there is also another party involved. How about you show a little respect to the organization that has allowed you to live the life you lead, that has allowed you to be in a postion to take all summer long and not have to answer to anyone on your career and let them know what you are doing so they can plan accordingly..
