Why? Most Oiler fans consider Hall their heart and soul leader. He is locked up for 7 years. It doesn't make sense why Ganger would be captain but then again the oilers rarely make sense when making a major move

If this is true, maybe they don't think Hall is ready yet.

Not sure I buy it - he's a character guy and good in the room by all accounts but opinion is so divided on him as a fit in Edmonton as a second line player - he's kind of a polarizing figure and I think you're putting him in a difficult spot by naming him captain - similar to Horcoff though for different reasons.

They must have some reservations about Hall as the team leader IF this is true. Not convinced it's true yet as Eakins said he wanted to wait until training camp to see the dynamics before naming a captain.

I never pictured Gagner as somebody who was going to last much longer in Edmonton. I guess the Oilers have different plans.

Gagner is a player that will have the statistics because he goes on streaks. But he's the type of player that if he's the center point of your team your just not going to win.

By this point in the Oilers rebuild, if they had known what they were doing, players like Gagner would have slid down the depth chart. Instead he's become a stable nonforce in their depth chart.

The Oilers really have a fear of saying goodbye to key players.

I agree. I personally don't understand why Hemsky and Gagner are still on the roster. They both should have been moved a year or two ago as they represent the 1st failed rebuilt/retool and neither made the difference the first time nor now. I give the Flames credit for getting rid of Bouwmeester as although he was a good player it just wasn't working out with the Flames. The Oilers keep clinging to players that have just never worked out for them and considering they are paying at or above market value for both it's kind of puzzling.

I do think it's hilarious that one game likely got Gagner a million more a year.

I never thought Gagner had any leadership potential. I figured the natural selection would have been Eberle.

Either way, its like being named the Captain of the Titanic, its all well and good until you actually get under way and the thing sinks under your feet.

Well, they aren't exactly begging Dubnyk to resign.

Lou was ready to pack, then named captain and given that gigantic contract

He's been their longer and he must be very respected and relied on in the dressing. Also i think it's a bit to early to be dumping that kind of responsibility on Hall. I think in another year or two they'll give it to him. It does seem kinda strange but it does make sense when you look at it like that i guess. Either way the Oil won't be making major progress next season.

i don't understand why it isn't Hall . The kid plays with intensity, can dominate at times, and appears to hate losing.

Gagner is inconsistent, is small, and just one of those guys you'd think the oilers would have already waved around the league in order to fill other roster needs.

When hopkins is ur #1 center, how the hell is gagner ur #2?? I just can't see how a team with such little guys being your top 2 centers can be successful. When they drafted hopkins, gagner should have been trade bait immediately.

long story short, oilers are dumb.

Do we have any sort of confirmation ? My Oiler-fan friend claims that it is a rumor from a crappy website.

Would be interesting to know the source. Eakins has said he wanted to see things before a Captain was named. It sounded as if this was going to be Eakins' call with input from the players, so talk of Gagner getting it before training camp even starts would go against that.

Wanye isn't really one to make up frivolous rumours. I'm betting there's something to this.

The source of the rumour is that *supposedly* the outgoing Oilers' captain suggests a name for the next captain, and that this player is generally the guy who gets the job.

And according to the rumour, Horcoff named Gagner as the guy who should get the job.

I dont know how accurate this "Oilers captains naming their replacement" thing is, but Wayne is confident enough that this is a done deal that he's staking his credibility on it.

Time will tell.

What an absurd way to name a captain.
