Was Dexter at its best ever as good as Breaking Bad? I'm not sure.
|
Dexter at its peak in season 4 was very strong and had me totally engaged and It was a top five show, but it was never the best thing on tv at any given time. I loved season four, thought it was top notch and the ending, my god....
Breaking bad has always been better though. From performances to writing to the overall direction and feel, it's a far superior show, even when Dexter was great.
Just my two cents of course.

You haven't seen it as its peak yet so you should keep watching as it gets a lot better in the middle before running out of steam a little at the end now.

You had me until the last sentence. No way is it running out of steam. But hey, that's just me and this is a dexter thread.

Breaking Bad is far, far more realistic than Dexter. It feels like a story that could really, actually happen today. Not to say it's entirely accurate by any means, though, of course. But that's partly why it hits home with its audience more than other shows. The characters remain true to themselves and all grow and respond to situations in ways that seem convincing and real. Some fans though who aren't as attached to the show and find season 5 to be a step back I find are the ones who tend to lean towards action oriented flicks, GOT, the walking dead, maybe more up tempo shows as far as "things happening" goes. But BB is a drama. And that's where its magic comes from. The chemistry, the way it can make you like a character to hate them completely (usually a sign of excellent acting) and, oh man, the tension.. The show really takes its time and things unfold slowly and with precision (the whole timeline of the story takes place over just the course of a year). It's just very thorough with every event that progresses the plot, and if you reflect you'll find that every episode has some significance. But I suppose if you don't care for or identify with core characters, no matter what show it is, it's not gonna peak your interest. But I think what makes it most engaging is that the characters feel genuine and relateable to many who follow it.
Dexter is as far from realistic as it gets, as great as it has been. And sadly the show has gotten away from the few things that were its bread and butter from the start. It's not as dark, not as smart, and hasn't introduced us to a true threat or season-spanning antagonist that can capture our attention and freaks us out a bit, like Trinity did. The internal struggle for his ability to feel like normal people has taken center stage now, while the rituals of his "dark passenger" have basically gone out the window... and imo the show was at its best when these two aspects were shared.

A little better tonight, but not by much. Still a very disappointing end to the series. They should have called the last two episodes Awkward Dinner Conversations Parts 1 & 2.
Oh but a bunch of crap tonight was really poorly written. Zach Hamilton leaving evidence behind under the desk was plain idiotic. Furthermore the dialogue between Dexter and Vogel was painful. The whole scene with the US Marshall and Harrison did not need to be spelled out like that way. Then finally Dexter being "made" by Saxon was just the worst. How smart can Dexter be when he's willing to stand outside the restaurant, in a bright blue shirt in the morning (for hours on end)? Of course Saxon was going to notice you dummy. Just horrific writing all season long; they're just mailing it in this season. Only the performances are keeping the show together at this point.

The only way they could remotely redeem this season is if in the final episode this season is revealed to be a dream and we return back to the end of season 7 and Deb shoots Dexter instead of LaGuerta. The writing is ridiculously bad right now, like network TV level bad.

It would be awesome if the series ends with Dexter in bed with Suzanne Pleshette and the last season was just a dream.

What killed me was Dexter's plan to grab Saxon involved him waiting in the opposite end of the parking lot and following him from there. Of coruse the guy's going to get to his car. Why on earth wouldn't Dexter just spy on him on the way in, see what car he has, and then either hide closer or disable it so the guy can't drive away?

If Dexter and Hannah go off to Argentina and live happily ever after, I'm going to invent a time machine and go back in time to warn myself never to watch the show because it will retroactively suck more than Vacutor, god of vacuums.

Actually I can totally see Hannah offing Dexter, and before he dies her telling him she offed Deb too.

If that's the ending, it's not like we won't be seeing it from a mile away.
Dexter screwed her over, you think she's going to completely forget about that? Also considering the fact that she's gotten rid of every partner she's had that crossed her in any way. She'll get him to totally uproot his life, and go with her to his own demise. It'll be the ultimate payback for her. She'll also sneak into Debs before they leave and get rid of her. Then she'll table Dexter after a little celebration meal which she will poison with her poisoney skills. He'll finally realize how stupid he's been, but it'll be too late. Then she'll take Harrison for her own, as he loves her. The end.
That or the even worse outcome, they all get out safe and live happily together. Oh man it would just make me cringe.. What happened to this show.

They're really using poisoning as a plot device too damn often these days. I was hoping Dexter would have accidentally killed Vogel when he poisoned her just to get that continent plot device out of the way for good.

I honestly don't get the angst in this thread. I think your memories have been making the past writing of the show a bit rosier than it was. There have always been ridiculous plot holes and weak writing in the show.
I actually don't hate this season, better than last season.
I'm sure the end will suck, much like every series Finale.

The Wire was the only show that I thought had a good finale. Other than that, I agree with you. Worst one had to of Seinfeld.

...If by "Rosy" you mean great, then no, my memory of past seasons is not skewed because the show was amazing. Also, I really don't give a crap about plot holes because all dramatic stories have them to a degree.
I'm sure the end will suck, much like every series Finale.
|
...I agree whole heatedly. I will be amazed if they somehow redeem whats left of this series with only three episodes remaining and pull off a finale that doesn't Suck.
