I've added Kronenbourg Blanc to my arsenal of regular beer purchases.

That is some tasty beer. A little girly if we're honest but it's really tasty.

Hoegaarden is 100x better. I enjoy a white beer from time to time, but I found KB to be way too citrusy

Had a couple kb's yesterday. Hoe garden is good too, but is different. KB is more peach flavoured when it warms up, hoegaarden more banana.

I like them both, nothing girls about it.

Had a Sour in the Rye yesterday. Fantastic, if you like sour beers.

All I could think of when I drank it is artificial citrus flavour. One of the very few beers I couldn't finish I didn't expect it to be that strong.

Too much caramel flavouring, sugar and coriander for me.

Actually Kronenberg Blanc seems to be a bit more of a grapefruit citrus, which seem like a trend right now.

I had an IPA at CRAFT a few months ago that had a grapefruit taste. I can't remember what it was called - it wasn't on the menu yet, the server said it was new and not listed.

It was after that I downloaded UnTappd - just so I can keep track of what I have tried.

Does anyone on this forum like/has tried sour beers anyway?

There are notes of grapefruit but I think that's just coming from the lemon and coriander mix they add.

The majority of grapefruity beers are IPA's hopped with Cascade Hops from the Pacific Northwest rather than adding citrus. Red Racer IPA for example.

Not typically cascade, Amarillo and Citra give grapefruit flavours.

The most fruity IPA you can get is the Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA, or Howe Sound's Super Jupiter.

Driftwood's Fat Tug also is a hop fruit bomb.

Here's a good run down of what hops many major IPAs use in the down in the U.S.

Willamete too, but I think it's rarely used because of such a low bittering rate.

It's not a style I am familiar with but am interested in trying it out. Any easy to find examples?

I was at the Granville Island Brewery a month ago and they were brewing Pucker Meister Berliner Weisse. It is soured by adding bacteria and the whole brewery smelled like a feedlot.

Yes sour beers were originally spoiled batches. But like anything, we started to drink them and develop a taste for them because deep down, we hate ourselves.

In Canada there aren't many regular sours on offering they're usually seasonals like Berliner Weisses which are okay but are pretty one-note when it comes to sour beer.

The best one that I could recommend that may be available in Calgary is Driftwood's Belle Royale:

Very good sours are usually very complex in flavour. You get an initial sour hit followed by a good amount of fruit and then if the beer's been aged in barrels flavours of the barrel like oak or wine etc.

The best sour I've had is probably Supplication by Russian River. It is a truly special offering. You wont be able to find it in Canada, but next time you're down in California ask around for good bottle shops and you may find a bottle.

If you're ever down in Portland than Cascade Brewery is a must visit for their lineup of sours.

That sour style will be new to me too. I'll need to try and find a few to taste.

Edit - According to Driftwood's website, Golden is the closest place to pick up their product.

Has anyone else pre-ordered the advent calendar this year?

I missed the boat last year, but the idea is just like an advent calendar for kids but full of beer. All 24 bottles have never been imported into Canada before so it should be interesting.

Hmm, I think Bruery distributes in Calgary at the Kensington Wine market. If so then pick up a Sour in the Rye. Too bad there's no Driftwood east of the Rockies. I would rate them as the best brewery in BC.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it says citrus on the bottle or something like that.

I'm no French expert, but I'm pretty sure the case in the photo says something like "lemon coriander flavored white beer".
