Yeah, I edited my post. Who cares, it doesn't matter. I'm not going to get into a hypothetical debate with you. You said "no court would convict you", this guy did but it's stupid and not the point of this thread.

yeah, so where's the internet shaming justice for that guy, or anyone else who says something but it doesn't happen to be filmed? what kinds of acts deserve this kind of publicity and which ones are better dealt with minus all the social media fanfare?

that's the main problem I have with the whole situation, is that there's people saying "omg I can't believe racism like this still exists in my hometown, it's the year 2013!"...the reality is that racism (and sexism and every other kind of -ism) is still widespread and rampant, but we're just better at not saying things out loud or acting on it like they were 50 years ago. does this ignorant dog woman yell "hey squint eyes, get back on your junk ship and sail home" at every Asian passerby? or did she just reveal her racism because she was being confronted and got pissed off?

if we want to arrest people for what's going on in their heads, we better make prisons big enough to fit like half the general population. this dog woman annoys me, but people like her just aren't worth the effort. oh and unless the videotaper at least tried calling bylaw services before going on this anonymous crusade, he's a big dumbass too. makes the rest of us Asians look like tattletale pansies.

Again, not excusing the racist comments but he was doing far more than just walking down a pathway.

Not excusing the racist comments whatsoever but it's not like the lady had vicious/aggressive dogs or wasn't picking up it's poop. What is the issue here?
I don't totally disagree with your rent-a-cop comment, but I think dog owners get too much of a free pass on the leash thing. Do only vicious/aggresive dogs have to be leashed in that park? Leash your dogs. I don't care how much you think they are the cutest dogs in the world and you always pick up their poop. If its not an off leash area, leash them. Its in the best interest of everyone that uses the park.

I don't think we'd have a Muslim Mayor, a black President and an Asian/Indian Governor in Louisiana, all the result of secret ballots where the majority have the opportunity to indicate secreted biases, if the environment were truly the same as 50 years ago.

It's not utopian but its genuinely different and much improved. More to go through time.

I find it pretty weird to be on the opposite end of this topic, when owners with unleashed dogs walk up to me on a mountain park path and ask me why I have my dogs leashed.

Since there are NO off-leash areas in mountain parks, I'm not sure why they're wandering around encouraging people to break the law. WTF?

The conversation is usually pretty short and doesn't end with hugs and kisses.

One time I came across a guy carrying a bloodied Jack Russell down a hill. The dog had been wandering loose in the scrub brush surrounding us near the tree line and found a Badger!!! A month or so later I'm in the very same spot and a lady with a loose, busybody Border Collie came up and asked why I had my dogs on a leash. Really? I loved answering that question.

I'm guilty myself as I will let my dogs run free if I'm alone up on a treeless ridge or an area where I have fairly clear visibility in all directions for a long ways with no one else or any other animals around. Definitely not in a forest. Not a perfect system but it usually works.

I'm pretty sure these two below were looking at or listening to a black bear up in the trees as we were walking past. When we came back the same way only half an hour later, bear tracks had merged with ours in this same spot, sending these two into a bit of a frenzy. Fortunately, they couldn't go chase the bear down.

Anyway, if you see me with my dogs on leashes, don't ask me why they're leashed, like that's some kind of crime.

Well I'd say now that Cowperson got his dog pics in, this thread officially has everything for forum newcomers on what to expect in most threads.

yeah I exaggerated there, what I meant is that I think that many, if not most people have to make a conscious effort to suppress inherent biases.
I read somewhere that it's a base adaptation of the human mind to categorize things this way, because it conserves brainpower. the difference was that in the past there wasn't as much societal pressure to do that.

I voted Nenshi, but to be perfectly honest I couldn't (and still can't) think of him exactly the same way as previous white mayors. in my head I'm always involuntarily thinking "hip young brown guy", and I dunno if I'll ever get to the point where those kinds of novelties wear off. the next generation will hopefully be more truly "colourblind".

but anyways, thanks for finding an excuse to post a picture of your loyal companions, that helps settle everyone's jangled nerves here.

I'm surprised there isn't more backlash against racist grandma's sense of style. That "middle-aged, overweight, lesbian, urban cowboy" look is the most offensive thing in all of this.

Actually, the most offensive thing is not leashing your damned dog. That really gets my blood boiling. It is so incredibly inconsiderate (and against the law) that people who refuse to do so should be punched repeatedly in the back of the head until they smarten up.

I don't have a problem with the guy filming her assuming his version of events is true. She should be shamed and publicly called out for refusing to leash her dog after another citizen asked her to do so (presumably politely). Turns out, of course, that she shamed herself much more.

Yeah, that was definitely a head scratcher from Mel. Like honestly, a lady tells a Chinese dude to go back to his country and he calls it "rude, but not racist"?

He was either drunk when he posted that or doesn't quite understand what racism is.

The funny thing is, is that those old white guys don't even realize their opinions are bigoted/archaic/slightly racist. They grew up in a different time, so they think their opinions are okay, and that the "stupid, young liberal posters are just too sensitive".

So, you are saying 'old white guys' are typically prejudiced?

I'm not saying that most old white guys are racist, just that most racists are old white guys. And also, that most old white guys are racist.
