Forgot to mention i had a chat with someone from the town about my accident. I was riding down one of the bike paths and as i crested over a foot bridge i saw the ashfault was washed away on the other side. Having no time to stop my front tire jammed into the sinkhole and flung me over the handle bars and into the ditch. Told them that pathway should have been checked and closed off. My accident was preventable had the town did it's job properly!

Sounds like you might want to speak to VladtheImpaler. I think his practice is in this area.

If you're going to talk to a lawyer, do it quickly. There are some very short limitations/notification periods attached to suing municipalities in Alberta. Here is an older article discussing some issues around suing governments for injuries caused due to gross negligence in road/sidewalk repair. The information may be somewhat out of date, and I don't practice in the area, but I do know there are still short notice periods.

I broke my wrist curling a few years ago, and here's the details I can remember.
I am right handed and it was my left wrist so....
I was in extreme pain until they gave me drugs,.
Had ortho surgery done 2 days after accident as the guy was busy.
3 pins.
The stay in the hospital was great, high on drugs, nurses getting you food and tea etc. nurses were super friendly and nice.
I think I had the cast on for 4 weeks.
Most difficult thing was doing up the button on my jeans/pants, having use of my right hand made life easier though.
They sent me home with 100 oxy's.
Couldn't drive or operate heavy machinery for 2 weeks as the drugs made you impaired.
On the nurses advice I drank a lot of prune juice.
Had 10 free visits to physio under my HC, so they gave me exercises to do and dipped my hand in hot wax????
Anyways, now I would say I have above 90% mobility in that wrist.
It's going to be the first time you stand on the first tee with your driver that you are going to have thoughts of snappiing your wrist again or something, but I haven't had any other problems in regards to golfing etc. since then.

You have an extremely difficult uphill battle to attach liability to a municipality. In fact it might be near impossible.
On another note, I hope your wrist heals. I did not scaphoid many years ago. It took 9 months in a cast.

I have no intentions of suing the town. I wanted them to know what happened and to make sure that area is closed to prevent other bikers from injuring themselves.

Sorry didn't mean to take a swipe at you. My post was more a response of those suggesting you contact council or put the town on notice of you injury/intent.
As I said before, I hope you heal fast. I was young 25 when I broke mine and it was a pain in the ass.
Take care.

I don't want to be a jerk about this, but should the taxpayers really be on the hook for this sort of accident? I have problems with this sort of mentality. There are reasons municipalities are protected and alot of it has to do with avoiding the slippery slope of litigation leading to increased municipal costs leading to increased taxes for everyone.
Back on topic, I forgot to mention to make sure you get your cast changed every 2-3 weeks. They get stinky and itchy after a while, changing the cast will help avoid discomfort and potential infections.

Some good news to report......
I went to check out the spot where i had my accident and the town to it's credit has filled in the sinkhole. Mission accomplished!
The swelling has gone down and the pain is gone. Finally i can come off my pain/narcotic meds.

How long the pain lasted?
How long you were in a cast?
Did you get full movement back in your wrist?
Thanks in advance

when I was 16 I broke my wrist at baseball practice. I was pitching and the batter hit a pop fly and as I'm running to chase the ball I didn't see that the big wooden fence was there and used my hands to try to slow myself down and snapped my right wrist right where the bone meets the thumb and a couple of the little bones in the middle.
It took forever to heal, It happened in may and I finally got the cast off that December. The wrist still gets stiff and some minor pain but I really don't notice anything out of the ordinary except that it pops and cracks all the time.

my worst problem during the whole thing was that I am right handed and that was the wrist I broke. Eating food sucked, but taking a dump was the worse, learning to wipe your ass with the hand that you cant do anything with wasn't very fun nor sanitary

Finally some good news to report. Went this morn to the cast clinic at the Rockyview. They took more xrays of my break and removed the half cast that had been on my wrist for the past 2 weeks.
Xrays showed the plate had done the trick and the bone I had broken was still in place. This was also my first time to see the xray of the break and the plate they had put in. It was an L shaped plate that ran along (screwed in to my arm bone) the incision to the bottom of the wrist and then to the right where its screwed into a small bone that had broken off at the centre of my wrist. Plate will not becoming out. See pic below....
The fact that the plate was holding the bone in place and there were no other breaks the specialist said I didn't need another cast. No cast means I can now drive again. Gawd I hated asking friends and neighbours for rides this past 2 weeks.
I was told to be very careful with that wrist as the bone is still healing. Also got some light duty exercises to help gain full motion back into my wrist. I go back to see the specialist in October.
