Possible New Police Cruisers?

Bizaro- I believe you are forgetting about the fact that the winter tires need to be stored during the summer, and vice versa in the winter.

If 500 cars each have 2 sets of tires; that is 2000 tires that need to go somewhere. Plus the extra cost for the mechanics to be swapping tires. I think there is also something about how police vehicles need new tires every X number of kilometres. (At least that was the case in the 80s with the RCMP.) That would mean tracking the mileage for each and every set of tire independantly from the odometer.

Yeah, a redundent set of winter tires is a huge extra cost, allseasons probably make sense. I though he meant they already had a backup set of tires (ie, each car had 2 sets of all-seasons, and winters would be another set).

It had nothing to do with tire wear; it was all about mileage. It was something low like 60-70 thousand km. I think the logic had to do with that any cruiser could be suddenly pulled into a high speed pursuit, so they wanted to make sure the tires were always in excellent condition.

Leaving it somewhat subjective left some margin for error, but setting a specific cut-off point took away some of the error. Similar to an Oil & Gas IT department determining that there should be no computer older than X years old. The PC could still be good, but if it was past that age it should be replaced.

I'm a Subaru guy, but that looks pretty terrible. Even though Subaru's might make decent cop cars. Maybe a little small though but if they went up to a legacy it might work.

Those cattleguards are badass, hippy crushing machines. I approve.

Still find the new livery a bit dark, with not enough white, and could be harder to spot (if I were in trouble and needed to find a cop...or to avoid a ticket).

You're right about the livery. It looks like only the front doors are white, and the rears are black. I would have thought all four doors would have been white to make them stand out more.

I was thinking more of an LAPD thing when it came out they were going back to black and whites:



This stands out and is visible and recognizable.

At first I didn't like the new look but I've started to think they do look pretty bad ass. However, the livery absolutely fails accessibility and visibility tests.

And that is where I have a problem with it. The current cruisers are a whole lot more visible. I saw a van in the new scheme, and it was underwhelming how little markings it had.

It's almost like some MBA bean counter did a spreadsheet on decaling costs, determined that he could "save some money" by going to a wrapped door and minimal decals, but failed to get a visibility impact report (or input from front line officers).

Or the CPS is purposefully trying to turn all the cruisers into ghost cars.

Where i'm from (La belle Province), the Police had a couple Imprezas. They looked pretty nice, although I agree they are a bit undersized.

I don't understand in Alberta why they don't use AWD cop cars, at least a couple...Cost?

The Ford Interceptor is available in an AWD platform, but the CPS have gone for the 2WD version. It must be to do with cost.

Talking about costs, might it be cheaper to split the fleet between kitted-out rapid response vehicles and less-powerful compact vehicles? I think other polices services have shown that not all police vehicles need to be rapid response vehicles.

While savings are found by using a single type of vehicle, (1) the CPS already uses multiple types of vehicles (i.e. vans, pick-ups, and SUVs); and (2) surely the fuel savings of using a vehicle with a smaller engine alone would make it cheaper.

I remember as a kid, we were visiting Colorado as a family and the cops were using Saabs. Not AWD, but they said it was the best car for day to day in the city in the snow (my dad had to go talk to the cop driving it)

I thought the Calgary police had a contract with Ford and Dodge for fleet vehicles. At least that would explain why I've never seen them use an import model for ghost cars (really hope that doesn't change)

It would seem to be a great idea to use imports as ghost cars.
