If by softening filter you mean scraping trowel, then I agree.
Aside from the gobs of makeup, the pictures are all great. Even hers. It's just the OTT makeup application that is distracting.

there are a lot of awesome pictures in this thread. I wish I am even half as good photographer as some of you. Always wanted to learn more about photography and even bought a Nikon DSLR a few years ago. I bought a zoom lens that I haven't really play around with. Hoping to take some course someday soon. Any suggestions on where should I go?

For a course? Or where to practice?
Myself, when I first started, I got a Zoo pass and went every weekend. That was with Film, so I would shoot 4-5 rolls and critique myself, and read books on Wildlife Photography (a lot of Wildlife photography concepts creep into other types of photography as well). Once I started shooting digital, I would just Shoot Shoot Shoot. Saturday, I was at the races for a couple hours, really only concentrated on three short track races, and I shot over 500 photos.
As for a courses, SAIT has some good ones I am told.
But a really good exercise is find photos you like, and attempt to re-create them, or at least re-create the technique used in them.

If you're into the online thing, Kelby Training has some really good offerings.

Maybe a bit of both... but mostly lighting.

Some recent happenings . . . .
About 6,000 came out for the 106th Annual Priddis & Millarville Fair last weekend
Blind pie-eating . . . .
. . . . . leads to messy consequences
Below, a muddy brawl after a thunderstorm at the 17th Annual Millarville Rodeo . . . .
Not technically great, but interesting to see this terrified chap with his hand trapped after being bucked off. He's being dragged around by a still angry horse.
Below, heading into the ring for her barrel racing run . . . .
Below, at the inside rail for the 108th Annual Millarville Races
Below . . . . . . wowee . . .
Below, three-legged races, at the Millarville Races, are harder than you think.
Below, self-portraits to remember the day at the Millarville Races. They were going for the Gatsby look.
Below, wandering the prairie with Pete.
Below, river swimming with Ruby

I just want to say that getting a good shot of Wonderland is hard. I tried once and didn't really find any angles I loved, mostly because the ear on the far side that you can see through the mesh always bugs me.

Ended up ordering a Fujifilm x100s. Should be here by next week. Stoked.
It was sold out in every single store I called in town. Pretty nuts.

It sure seemed like it, if only for those few moments.
