If you could put Houston's downtown in Denver and replace the weather with Minneapolis/St. Paul (warmer in the summer but can be just as bitter in the winter) you would have something similar to the US version of Calgary.

Minus the mountains, I think it has quite a bit. Tons of lakes everywhere, lots of fishing and outdoor sports, and hockey here is more ingrained here than anywhere else in the US.

It even has a giant tacky mall if you want a slice of Edmonton.

I've been to the Twin Cities on numerous occasions and I can tell you it definitely reminds me of Calgary on a much bigger scale.

Denver definitely, many small towns in Idaho are same climate, nothing on the scale of Calgary. Also, Cheyenne Wyoming is similar- much smaller but mountainous/climate-wise very similar.

I've never felt the 'Canadian' vibe more in any U.S. city as I have in Minneapolis. Perfect combination of living the American dream in a place that feels like home.

No doubt superficially Denver appears most similar: mind you Calgary's is a more powerful/denser downtown than Denver's despite our much smaller population.

I've heard that Minneapolis feels a lot more similar though in its urban geography - except its downtown is a bit more isolated from surrounding neighbourhoods - carved up with freeway interchanges and such. Twin cities are three times the size.

Their largest city has a population of just over 100,000 people, which pretty much compares to Forest Lawn. They both probably have comparable gun, crime and crackhead statistics as well.

People from Montana and Idaho seem to have a tough time believing there is not one, but two cities of a million plus people just a few hours north of them.

One day I really want to show some of the more clueless ones a picture of Calgary.

Not to be one of those people who nitpick, but Edmonton doesn't have a population of a million itself. You need to include the surrounding communities to break that number.

And needs it. I've never been so cold as a weekend I spent there. Really liked the city though

Maybe the similarities between Denver and Calgary are because the Denver airport sometimes feels like it's closer to Calgary than Denver when you're driving to it.

I would have to say Minneapolis definitely has a Calgary feel to it.

OKC feels a lot more like Winnipeg than Calgary. Real small town feel to that city.

Phoenix perhaps.

Probably why there are so many snowbirds there. Heat is different but humidity is about the same. Both big golf cultures. Both large landlocked cities.

As strange as this may seem to some people though, I think there are far more cities around the world, that are closer to Canadian cities than American cities are.

I spent a lot of time in Melbourne Australia, and it's almost identical to Vancouver. I felt more safe, and more around family in that city, than any city ever in the States. The values are just so much closer. People don't walk around afraid, people aren't packing heat, people aren't railing against global warming and drugs and abortion.

There are a lot of the cities around the world, that have nearer cultures to us than the States.

Actually now that I think about it, Melbourne is great! A lot of the great stuff of Vancouver, without all the nozzle Canuck fans!

Seriously though, and this isn't an knock against the question cause it's an interesting question; there are cities all around the world that feel more like Calgary or Canada, than most, if not all the cities in the States.

This is obviously more common in countries like Britain, Australia, and other ex colonies, but applicable to a few others as well, especially in Europe.

That is correct in regards to the freeways. I don't know how many of you stayed near downtown but the area around the metrodome is pretty dumpy and Calgary doesn't really have that type of area. It's not a bad city but I get more of an Edmonton vibe from it than Calgary as it feels like an older city.

Minneapolis reminded me of Edmonton for dome reason. I wasn't a big fan. Snowy and brown, no mountains.
