Isner playing out of his mind. Winning rallies against Nadal.

But he's still going to lose.

so going into the US Open starting on the 26th.

Raonic will be seeded #10 (ranked 11)
Pospisil will be unseeded (ranked 39)

Vasek needs 7 guys above him to pull out (fat chance)
So far Tsonga #8 and Cilic #19 out of the 7 have withdrawn

Levine's had such a bad year that he's dropped down to qualifying after being in the main draws of each of the first 3 Grand Slams. He will be joined in qualifying by Dancevic, Diez and Polansky.

Our friend Mackenzie MacDonald has received a wildcard for US Open qualifying.

only one week away! the storylines and drama leading up to this are awesome, hopefully the actual tennis lives up to it.

- can the Mallorcan Menace, in the middle of bashing his way through one of his best seasons (even counting a shock SW19 exit) cap things off with a 2nd USO title and further cloud the greatest ever debate? or has he peaked too early and due for a letdown at the wrong moment?

- the once Mighty Fed was undisputed king of New York with 5 consecutive wins, but now out of the 4 majors he's won, it's the trophy furthest in the rear view mirror. after a horrific summer filled with injuries, wacky racquet experiments and low confidence, he finally seemed to be figuring it out again in Cincy. ranked #7 and on nobody's favorite to win list, can he summon the magic one more time like Sampras did?

- current #1 Nole has been surprisingly un-dominant since Australia, making it deep into tourneys as expected, but not winning any of them. he has even conceded that Nadal is the true top player at the moment. hard courts are normally his house, but can he find his swagger again, or are his shoulders just not broad enough to carry the number one spot for long periods of time?

- Andy owns half the majors but has been a ghost unicorn since Wimbledon. what's even stranger is how little press his brief appearances in Montreal and Cincy have gotten. maybe it's due to his earlier reputation for flakiness that lets him off the hook with the media and fans. but if he wants to be considered a true threat for #1 honors, he needs to start making more consistent appearances on final Sundays, including defending his USO crown.

- The Canadian kids had CP in a tizzy for a while as they made deep unexpected runs during Rogers cup. but then they followed it up with the usual letdowns a week later, and once again the Tennis Thread is the same 2 or 3 people arguing with themselves like hobos on a park bench. can Milos, Popsicle and their countrymen re-ignite the sleeping (comatose?) giant that is the Canadian tennis fan community?

take it away, Bart Scott...

Crazy to see Federer fall to 7th in the rankings:

http://www.atpworldtour.com/rankings/singles.aspx

Ferrer and Berdych round up the top five.

I bet 10 bucks to 100 that Milos will win the US Open. That's ten bucks I'll never see again but can you imagine!!

you got taken for a ride...
http://www.oddschecker.com/tennis/us...us-open/winner

you should be winning at least $670 for your bet! amazingly, Djokovic is still the oddsmakers' favorite despite his current bleh form, and Nadal/Murray are tied for 2nd.

actually if I'm looking for the cheap/sentimental bet, I like Roger at 10/1 or lower. there's a non-zero chance that the top 3 guys all have their leg fall off while stretching for a defensive slice, and then it's money in the bank...unless he runs into Tomas "1 great match per week" Berdych again.

Mango and Girly, I enjoy your conversation more than any other hobos on park benches I've ever met.

Round one of qualifiers starting up tomorrow....

Levine vs Maxime Teixeira (FRA)
Diez vs Matthias Bachinger (GER) [27]
Danko vs Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) [10]
Polansky vs Daniel Evans (GBR)

Diez got crushed, no surprise.
Levine goes tonight, Danko and Polansky tomorrow.

Dancevic has advanced to round 2 in straights set.
Polansky up later this afternoon, up against Evans who's a tough customer, gave Pospisil quite a match in the Vancouver final 3 weeks ago.

With Dancevic in good form and Levine playing like hot trash, I'm pretty sure our Davis Cup team is now set. I would have prefered Dancevic anyways because he's dynamic and can beat anyone on his day whereas Levine is just a pusher.

I watched a bit on the US Open live stream, It was solid Frank today and nice way to avenge last year when he lost to Gabashvili after having MP's.

He didn't attack as much as usual but had a sound strategy as Gabashvili was missing left and right - Frank was composed and patient and took his chances. The break back at love at 1-2 in the second was a particularly well played game. And he found big serves on almost all the BP's against him. First set was very solid.

I saw some of Herbert-Estevez today - not impressed. If Frank is even playing at 75% it should be routine win over Herbert. But with Frank we never know, right?

USO draw preview...Fed and Rafa in the same quarter, again:
http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2013/.../#.UhZZ94Tna70

geez, ever since either of them started falling out of the top 4, it seems they're always set up for a QF. Roger has a lot of commas in his bank account, you'd think he could slip the draw makers a few bucks so they don't put Kryptonite Incarnate in his way at these important tournaments. not that he's even guaranteed to make it that far anymore.

also, Redfoo needs to stop talking or generally showing his face all the time, but if his gf can take down Serena in a final, I might actually watch a womens' final for the 2nd major in a row.

Milos drew Ferrer (quarters) and Gasquet (Round of 16) and Lopez (Round of 32), absolutely perfect. If he doesn't make the semifinals of this tournament he sucks. I'm not sure Ferrer gets past Janowicz.

Pospisil gets a qualifer in round one then Nadal in round 2. Maybe he'll be Steve Darcis!

Dancevic will play sometime today, it's raining.

US Open without rain is like Tennis without racquet.

Since Darcis knocked out Nadal in the first round, wouldn't Pospisil be more like Lukas Rosol, who knocked Nadal out in the second?
