They supported their team, unsuccessfully tried to out cheer our section, and good times were had by all.
Having just returned to North America after five years of living in Europe, this kind of civility among fans almost brings a tear to my eye.

Now hold on a second. I never said anything about you or anyone else having to cheer for the Leafs!

Here's a little quiz for you:

1. Live in Calgary, cheer for the Flames.
2. Live in Manitoba, cheer for the Jets.
3. Live in Toronto, cheer for the _____.

You said #1 and strongly implied #2. Having done that, how do you weasel out of #3?

I only said #1. You and dissentowner came to your own conclusions about #2 and #3. I'm fine with people living in Toronto cheering for the Flames.

Howie16 has always been very clear about his position on sports cheering. His position relates to Calgary and Calgary sports teams only. Picking a similar situation in another city is not an equal comparison. Live in Calgary, cheer for the Flames, live in Toronto, cheer for whoever you want because it's not Calgary.

First: You said that Jets fans should 'move back to Manitoba'. You're assuming that the only reason anybody would be a Jets fan is that they come from Manitoba, and that the only acceptable place to be a Jets fan is Manitoba. That's #2 right there.

Second: If people in Calgary are only allowed to cheer for the Flames, and only people in Manitoba are allowed to cheer for the Jets, then on what possible grounds are people in Toronto allowed to cheer for anybody but the Leafs? Try answering that without being an obvious hypocrite.

Oh, I see. Then he's just a blatant hypocrite. Well, I'll cheer for whoever I damned well want to, and he can try to throw me out of the city if he likes.

But to be fair.... why WOULD you cheer for the Jets if you weren't from Manitoba?

If you were a legitimate Thrashers fan before the move? I'm a closet Jets fan for this reason. Loved the Thrashers as my number 2 team. However didn't want to be lumped in with the newfound obnoxious jets fans.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not the type of person to accept challenges from interweb tough guys.

You're a hypocrite because you claim that your city, and only your city, is subject to some kind of law that says everybody in town has to cheer for the same team as you. You are perfectly willing to allow a Winnipegger to cheer for the Flames, but if a Calgarian wants to cheer for the Jets, you find it intolerable and want somebody to make him stop.

If there is a rule that you can only cheer for your hometown team, then it must apply to everybody and every team in every town. Calgary isn't a special snowflake, and neither are you.

It's logic, and it works the same for everybody. You should try it some time.

The only 'interweb tough guy' in this conversation is you. You're the one telling people they are not allowed to cheer for the teams they want to. Well, I'm gonna cheer for the Bruins, just because I damn well feel like it. How you gonna stop me, tough guy?

It's an opinion, not a law. How do my preferences put so much sand in your panties?

Oh god will you two just shut up already? This is making me ######ed reading it.

Cheer for whoever you want. If a Flames fan of their entire life moved to Toronto, MTL, Vancouver, wherever they are entitled to stay a Flames fan, and that works for all teams and cities. The hell does it bother anyone who cheers for what?

Although there is this one guy I work with who's never been to America and he cheers for American teams over Canada is a huge fan of the NY Yankees and Rangers for some reason. No family in American, no ties, just loves America and the Rangers/Yanks. His name is Brad something.. we all call him Brad Hull for being a traitor.

It sounds like The Preds are just trying to manufacture a rivalry with the Hawks.

Nashville is somewhat isolated geographically. They have no natural rivalries. After St. Louis and Columbus, Chicago is the next closest NHL city and none of them are conveniently close.

My apologies for wasting your internet time. I just found Jay's Braveheart inspired rant both amusing and ironic, and decided to yank on his chain a bit for some entertainment.

My recent chain-yanking aside, I can accept that people chose to cheer for other teams. I have friends who are Oiler fans, friends who are 'Rider fans, etc., and I do enjoy the pre and post game banter between us.

However, I have to admit that I wish that there were fewer opposition fans present for home games against teams like the Leafs, Habs and Cannots. I think it would be a better experience if 98% of people in the stands were wearing red and cheering hard for the Flames/Stamps to win like it was a playoff game.

It would not surprise me if Jay was this kind of fellow. Likely has never set foot in Boston and probably couldn't tell you what state it is in without Google, but dammit, ain't nobody gonna tell him what ta do!

I disagree. I think the best sporting events in town are when the Oilers/Jets/Riders come to town. Having the opposing fans in your building gives everyone more zest and vigour and gives the building a buzz.

That's why hockey historians often say the best game of all time was the Red Army vs. the Montreal Canadiens on New Year's Eve 1975. It must have been and those opposition fans in the Forum that flew in from Moscow to cheer on their fellow Communists.

I have nothing good to say about 'Rider fans as a collective group inside of McMahon Stadium.
