I've had a hot tub for about 4 years and I use it about 1-2 times per week in the summer and and 2-3 times per week in the winter.

I will never go without a hot tub again. I put an outdoor speaker with volume control out there, and it's awesome to have a couple beers and hang out there with friends and whatnot.

The maintenance of these things is about the same as a fish tank. I check the chemicals each week with the little tester strip. Usually it only requires some Bromine. And I'm good to go.

I drain and fill it each Fall and Spring. And I spend about $75 on chemicals every 6 months. Get them from www.hottubessentials.ca

As mentioned, you're either a hot tub person or you're not. And you are correct in it costing about $30 per month in power. To me that is absolutely worth it.

The fiancee and I are likely getting one sometime soon here, so I'm taking a crash-course in hot tub maintenance.

I'm definitely looking forward to soaking post-soccer games.

So I have to admit, with the exception of Fotze's (beautiful yet horrific) description of 'Floaties', the CP response makes me much more inclined to keep the thing.

Only risk is that the previous owners put it in BEFORE the garage went up and I can't figure out how the heck I'd get it out. Would be so much easier to have them deal with it.

Screw it. Always wanted to be in a low-budget porno, seems this is my best shot. Hell, I'll even get a producer credit.

This hot tub debate is messed up. Congrats, CP forum.

I always think that a hot tub has more versatility in our climate than an outdoor pool.

Hot tub vs Outdoor Pool. Hot tub wins in Calgary. Both are expensive, and I agree that the best hot tub or pool is at the neighbours.

One year our neighbour had chlorine'd up the pool so bad our skin dissolved for 4 days. Not so good.

Whoa there pardner! What about manmade lakes, where do they stack up in your hierarchy of artificial bodies of water?

There is absolutely the element of the 'after the bar' scene. A hot tub at night, with 3 or more people, and drinks, and music....good times. But ummm yes they are good for your muslces and relaxation and all that crap too.
