With the pretty much tax free status that he would get over there, it would be hard for a young hockey player that's getting low balled to turn a KHL offer down.

I would expect that he wants that million dollar plus contract. I'm not sure he's worth the Canucks chasing that hard.

Definitely feels like an agent trying to put some pressure on a GM to get a deal done.

If Tanev goes to the KHL would that then make him the best goalie not playing in the NHL?

Nope. Only because Luongo will get that title.

The NHL and KHL have an agreement. It isn't a formal transfer agreement like the NHL has with other clubs. But it has been followed to this point and it isn't likely to be broken for a player of Tanev's calibre.

Basically, if he agrees to a contract with the Flames he can't sign in the KHL.

I don't care what the money is like, you couldn't pay me to play in Russia right now. What a circus of a country, good luck with those Olympics.

I know it is perfectly within a team's rights to offer sheet but I hope the Flames steer clear of these in the future.

Yes it would. He'd have to live in Russia. He currently gets to live in Vancouver. Imagine Dorothy gets taken from Oz and sent to Kansas. That's what we're dealing with here.

he got paid 900k last year, if they aren't offering anywhere near 1m are they asking him to take a paycut?

haven't seen that rumor at all, any links?

I have no idea about any of this but Jordan Schroeder just took a significant pay cut off his ELC - his cap hit used to be like a million and now it's 600k I think. One way though.

This to me just sounds like an agent trying to negotiate through the media when he's not making any headway. I very much doubt a young player like this wants to move to Russia, there's a huge class divide between how the star players are treated and the ordinary cattle. It's probably just smoke and they'll end up signing him for a mil or something.

I don't know if that matters much. Personally I would take a job shoveling demon crap in hell for a million bucks a year tax free.

different situation than Schroeder though, he has yet to lock down a spot, whereas Tanev has for the past 2 seasons

I think it is just negotiating, Tanev and his agent have no leverage, if he was more offensive someone might offersheet him but because his strength is in his own zone it probably wouldn't be enough that the Canucks don't match

As much as people like to cut down the KHL, playing there during a contract holdout is still better than playing nowhere and making nothing. It's both a negotiating tactic and a legitimate option.

If you're Tanev and you see 4 long term contracts ahead of you on the depth chart, it might make you question your ability get the minutes you want to increase your relative worth and future pay days.
