Objectively have a look at real estate values and you will note that lakefront, direct lake access, and lake access all add to market value. Its like green space and no green space, or being on a busy street vs a quiet one. I'd like to hear the real estate guys chime in but they are probably worried about irritating potential customers.

Subjectively, i have noticed a lot of people who grew up in LBV have done their time in the yuppie havens and return when they have kids. Fundamentally the lake is about secured semi private access to a safe playground area for kids that is far more then a regular playground. You then get to know the other people with kids and there you have the building blocks of a community.

Objectively the highest real estate values in the city per sq. ft. are close to, or located, downtown.

Therefore the best communities to live in, as voted by the market and the citizens of Calgary, are those closest to the downtown core.

QED.

A house on the river sells for way more than a house on the lake. So objectively, rivers are better than lakes.

I don't want to hear about your house on Okanogan lake anymore. Objectively, my vacation property consisting of a tent on a farmer's land on the Red Deer river is better. Because it's a river.

Good points. That's another thing about lake communities: they are great for people at more stages of their lives than anywhere else. Frankly, a single 28 year old guy doesn't have a broad enough range of life experience to make the judgement that an inner city neighborhood is the best neighborhood. It's too narrow a view of what makes a community great.

Those of us who have been through more stages of life are more qualified to determine which neighborhoods are better than others and our opinions should carry a greater weight as a result.

This isn't a conversation about which neighborhoods are better for you as an individual; it's about determining the best neighborhood for Calgarians. So the fact that some of highlight the fact that you can ride your bike to your office tower is not a compelling argument for a neighborhood being good or bad for all Calgarians.

Sorry about "neighborhood" being spelled the American way - phone kept autocorrecting.

I am older than you, so your opinion is wrong.

That's how this works right?

If you actually voiced a well-thought-out opinion instead of dismissive, snippy little insults we might actually be able to have a conversation. You seem cool enough so I don't know why you are choosing to be a non-contributing zero.

I didn't see Tuxedo on the list. I lived there for 8 years and while I didn't partake of the multiple pawn shops and money trading establishments surely being a block Lina's made it one the best places in the country.

I am not sure where I insulted you in that post. I used you criteria. I am older and "have been through more stages of life", therefore my opinion is more valid than yours. Is that not what you wrote?

My opinion is that these lists are real POS. Everyone has a different criteria/measure of what is best for them and their family. Anyone that thinks that their opinion is greater than anothers is well............

Early on in this thread you displayed zero interest in discussing anything. You opinion was an objective fact.

Anyway enjoy you man made lake. I will think about you as I hit my spring fed natural lake.

This is hilarious simply because it's internally inconsistent. You maintain something to be objectively true, but you're prepared to accept that a lot of people will take differing views on it. Almost as if it's a matter of opinion or something!

No, not unless you meant a black hole in the literal sense. I.e. if every non-lake community had its own gravitational well which sucked in all light and matter, obliterating the community itself and everyone in it. Otherwise, if you simply mean a large empty space, that's still a matter of opinion. I may just happen to really, really love frisbee, and want a large empty space wherein I can throw a frisbee around.

Anyway, if my options were "live in Lake Bonavista or quit your job and leave the city", I'd be typing a resume. I cannot stand to live any significant distance from the central hub of bars, restaurants, and work, which is why I live 2 blocks north of 17th. Of course, that's just me.

I don't think I've seen a man-made lake before. How do they compare to natural lakes? I would definitely favour living in a lake community if these synthetic lakes are as nice as natural ones.

I too would prefer a green space over a lake, which is why I was sure to imply that a lake is objectively better only if the communities that don't have a lake have an absolutely useless space instead, but nothing detrimental like a landfill or something such. I do realize a black hole is astronomically devastating but it's the first thing that came to mind!

I can't speak for all of the lakes, but LB is filled with city water, so the water is very fresh. The property in general is maintained to a much higher standard than a typical public beach. The sand is groomed regularly, there are a lot of flowers, trees, bushes, etc. There are also rules that help keep the facility nice and clean (e.g. no dogs allowed so you don't have to worry about stepping in mess, no glass bottles so there is never broken glass, etc.).

Also, the lake properties in lake communities in Calgary are private facilities. They are never full and people generally care more for the park as they basically own a piece of it and have a vested interest in keeping it nice.

I'm posting some photos below. What lake around Calgary is nicer, may I ask?

Lake properties have green space as well as a lake. Please check these out and give me your honest opinion. Keep in mind this isn't even a thorough look at the lake. There are actually two beaches (I think I only have photos of one, there are six tennis courts, basketball courts, a toboggan hill, four or five different playgrounds, beach volleyball courts, free boat rentals (kayak, row boats, canoes, paddle boats and those stand-up boat things)), etc.

Good lord, forum etiquette. Spoiler tag for a ridiculous amount of images.

Not to mention he stated man made lakes aren't as nice as natural ones. He never said anything about comparing Calgary's man made lakes to each other, oh sensitive lake dweller.

Really? That's all you have to say? I mean, I clearly went to some effort to gather these images for offsidespecialist, and you are one of the people that "thanked" a post that said man-made lakes aren't even close to as nice as natural ones. So I'm showing you some nice photos and you can't even be bothered to comment on the content of the post? You're a real piece of work.
