Call Shaw and ask them to "bridge" the modem. It will take about 5 minutes and they will confirm the "bridge" is established.

Massive disclaimer that this may not work, but I don't see why it shouldn't.

Plan B is to get them to switch it, and you can allways call back to back out af any time.
Will this cause issues if the DIR-645 doesn't have client mode? As well, there could be channel interference with the second wireless router.

I think the best thing to do is call Shaw first, then install the wireless router. You will still have a wired internet connection after the modem is bridged, should you need it.

If any of you need some help PM me and I can call you and walk you through it.

Before all this bridge talk that's what I was thinking of doing... If I do this and it doesn't work will it fry the router?

Man I hate routers.

Yup, I was suffering the same lousy reception for a good year after receiving their lousy modem/router. Finally got pissed off one day and hooked up my old wrt54 that was tucked away and got them to do the bridge thing.

I'm now back to full wifi signal throughout our home as well as the whole backyard. Well worth the 15 minutes or so it took.

I went from a signal strength of -70 dBm to -40 dBm, and my wireless speeds went from 48 Mbps to 92 Mbps (that seems very out of whack, I tested with Shaw Speed Test before and after)...

Definitely worth it to not use the Shaw provided router.

Got the router today and installed it with no trouble. As suggested, a simple phone call gets shaw to bridge their modem, and the instructions for Mac were very easy.

It was up and running within minutes and I'm definitely seeing noticeable improvement in signal strength.

Thanks for the suggestion on the d-link router at that great price (I picked one up from Best Buy in Red Deer) and for the accompanying advice.

You guys are so cute setting up your new routers. Takes me back to '97 and the Linksys BEFSR41 - costing $200+, and sporting no wifi (but it had four switched ethernet ports!)

The past 2-3 days my WiFi has been brutal at home, I think someone upgraded to Shaw and got the same Router / modem as mine.

I changed my channel a few times today and finally found one that gave me the excellent wireless speeds as before (Shaw BB 50).

Down 45.66 Mb/s - Up 2.87 Mb/s

The first router I set up was in 2001 or so, it gave me fits then and they still do.

No it won't fry it, at worst it just won't work until you "bridge it" by calling Shaw.

Honestly, I understand where you are coming from, but I think best course of action is to sit tight until the router comes. Call Shaw and ask them to bridge it. Then run the setup on the modem. If you have issues I am sure we can help you get it going. Absolute worst case is you call Shaw back and get them to un-bridge it aka turn the wifi back on.

I think I am going to back away from my earlier suggestion, and just suggest going this route. If you use the install CD you should be up and running fairly quickly. Now days routers are very easy to set up right out of the box, I haven't had an issue unless I start monkeying around with the advanced settings.

So are the telus wifi routers better than shaw? I haven't really had any issues using the telus one, so it seems that shaws must especially bad.

With Telus, the issues are before the router...

They are pretty much both the same from a performance standpoint, in my experience.

The main problem I have with Shaw's Cisco routers is that they are resistant to changing any settings on them, like subnets, SSID or passwords. Not that it won't let you change them, but things work really poorly or not at all, after you make those changes. Never tried the same thing with an Actiontec or SMC router to know if the same issue exists there as well.

I never had problems with the Telus router either. Had the 25Mbps package and I never noticed any lag in online gaming or streaming Netflix.

The Shaw one gave us quite a bit of trouble. The new router I installed works pretty great, except that I'll lose connection every so often.

It is dual band (2.4GHz & 5GHz), and sometimes one band will just drop connection, and I'll have to connect to the other. Anyone have any idea why? It's a Netgear N600 if that makes any difference.

Well, I'm stumped. I bought the router thing and within an hour, I had no internet, no wi-fi and was swearing like a trucker. Can anybody explain this to me? Obviously, you will have to use small words and short sentences. Be descriptive.

So I tried to hook this up (D-Link DIR-645) to my Cisco modem/router supplied by shaw. I have a Macbook so I was unable to run the disk installer and had to go through the web interface. I tried a whole slew of things. Talked to a D-Link tech support chat guy, changed the ip to 192.168.0.2, changed it back, bridged the modem, reset the D-Link, punched it, tried 2 different ways of setting this unholy contraption up and ended up calling Shaw and ashamedly asking them to unbridge my router.

In the end, I was able to set up the wi-fi on the new router, connect to it with my devices, but for some reason there was no internet. Can anybody help?

However, I just saw some user reviews (not CNET, or the like) that mention dropped signals, so I guess I'm not the only one. Maybe a firmware update will help (if there's one available).

Just picked this router up from Future Shop. The only store near me that had stock was Shawnessy, but paying $30 for a good router makes it well worth the drive.
