Default Python escapes pet store and kills two boys in NB

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-br...oa-attack.html

"Rogers-Marsh said the preliminary investigation led police to believe that a python snake escaped its enclosure at the store sometime overnight. Initial information indicates the snake got into the ventilation system and then into the apartment upstairs.

"It's believed the two boys were strangled by the snake," she said, noting that autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow in Saint John."

That would be terrifying to wake up to.

Wake up to and have your life end! Horrible. I heard the boys were between 6-7. Just crazy.

People that think snakes are suitable pets are morons. What an unspeakable tragedy. At the very least the pet store owner should be charged with manslaughter.

As somebody who used to keep snakes something smells rotten in NB here. I will be very interested to see that autopsy report.

Horrible tragedy no doubt, however to vilify all owners of snakes is wrong IMO.

Negligence in any form is wrong, be it driving a vehicle, having a dog or owning a reptile emporium. The negligence in ownership is the point of error.

BTW I do not own snakes.

Well I guess nobody should keep dogs either seeing as they kill way more people than snakes. You would be surprised how many responsible people are keeping big snakes in your neighborhood right now. If in fact the snake killed these two boys then it is a tragedy but something doesn't fit here. Snakes rarely attack people and do not see them as a food source. So this snake went through the ventilation system, strangled one boy to death in his sleep, and then proceeded to another boy? If I am those RCMP officers I am doing a very detailed investigation of this. It doesn't add up to me at all.

I don't want to derail this at all, but that's one of the dumbest statements I've ever seen here. This case sucks for sure, and I hope the owner gets charged as well, but to say all snake owners are morons is unjust.
Plenty of snakes are non poisonous and don't strangle small children either.

Last year, 19 of the 35 people in the US who died from a dog attack were under the age of 10.

Maybe dog owners are morons too.

Fair enough, but Its my opinion. The Florida everglades are now overrun with non native snakes like pythons which are a scourge on indigenous species. Allowing such exotic wildlife as house pets caused this ecological disaster. It would be nice if all pet owners were responsible, but that's far from the case.

Australia has the same problem with feral cats.

Another tragic example of what happens in non-lake communities.

I can't find it at the moment but more recent investigations indicate that the Burmese Python scourge in the Everglades wasn't caused by negligent snake owners but rather it was a snake research facility that was destroyed by a hurricane and as a result some of the snakes escaped.

I agree that something isn't right with this story. Snakes don't generally kill and try to eat people, especially two in the same night. They usually only kill to eat. I don't want to speculate too much since this is a tragic event but it wouldn't surprise me if the snake coiled around the boys for warmth and ended up killing them. A similar thing happened a few years ago, although, in that case they also found a bite mark on the child which was more likely a predatory behaviour. Also, that was a Rock Python IIRC which are more temperamental.
