When you get your phone back, download an app called Prey. It's like find my phone on steroids and you can use it to track your laptops if that ever gets stolen. Oh and did i mention it's free?

Why are people entertaining this fool? He obviously would know what an avatar is....what's next, asking how topfiverecords won such a great trophy? Jesus I can't believe this is allowed to go on.

Confronted the dad today in a non-threatening matter. Pretty much told him I traced my phone to a property and his daughter's car was there. Told him I didn't want to accuse her of stealing and maybe she just took it by accident (Flat out lie as I asked her if she had seen it), but I didn't want to be confrontational. He called her in front of me and she asks him what kind of phone and what color...even though I told her that information yesterday but she said "oh I must have mistaken it for my phone" even though her iphone has stickers all over it but whatever I got my phone back and that's all that matters.
I just feel bad for her dad as he's a great guy and he was totally embarrassed.

So, a friend who is not technical and old lost his iPhone. I don't have an I phone. How do you find your apple ID to trace said phone?

Did he have "Find my iPhone" enabled?
If he did he can go to icloud.com, log in with the apple ID associated with the phone, and you can find it through the web interface and even make it play a sound via the web interface.
A friend of mine in Toronto was worried that he left his iPhone at the cottage, a 3 hour trip out of town. He had looked all around the house... even tried calling it, but remembered he had left it on vibrate mode. He looked it up on my iPad and played the sound.. it had fallen out of his pocket and between the seat cushions on his sofa. Saved him from driving all the way to the cottage and getting frustrated that it wasn't there....

Do you have to log in with an apple ID when you first activate an iPhone?

This reminds me of a story that happened to my friend with a much less happy ending.
He leaves his IPhone in a cab or possibly a bar. He phones it the next day. A woman answers and says she'll return the phone to him, but only if he re-imburses her $200 for the money she paid to acquire it. My friend agrees as the cost of a new phone is far in excess of that.
He meets this woman in downtown Vancouver, who turns out to be a crackhead. Somehow during this exchange she manages to convince him to give her the money, while she goes back to her place and grabs the phone. She takes the money and never returns.
He uses the find my phone App, and, sure enough, the phone is located in a local crack tower. The issue is that the App can't determine exactly which apartment it's in. My friend phones the police, who are for whatever reason, extremely enthusiastic about helping him retrieve this phone from a crackhouse. The police enter the building and then proceed to pull out random crackheads and thrown them into a paddy wagon. Apparently, the lost phone gives them a valid reason to be in the building itself and arrest anyone they see doing illegal activty in the hallway.
After pulling a half a dozen crackheads out of the building, the police tell him that there is no way to get the phone back, as they cannot locate it to a specific apartment.
My friend uses the App again the next day. The Phone has now been moved to Surrey. My friend drives out to central Surrey, and, once again, the phone is located in a relatively large apartment building. He phones the cops again. They proceed to do the same thing and, once again, inform him they cannot get the phone without a more specific location.
The next day, he decides to cut his losses. Reports the phone stolen, has the data deleted, and buys a new phone.
