Menudo Soup. It was tough and leathery. I couldn't choke it down.

Some random Chinese dumpling type thing served to me by a Chinese family. Wish I knew what it was, but it was awful. Just terrible.

Durian flavoured gelato was a recent one. Never had a durian before, but if it tastes like the gelato does, I never will.

Squid. Ran to the bathroom and spat it out and then spent the rest of the evening trying not to retch. Blech.

You're probably thinking of baijiu. Low quality baijiu is bad, but high quality baijiu can be really good.

No, just not a very developed palate for wines or spirits. Maybe that will come with more exposure to different ones. From what I tasted of "wines", I would hazard to guess that most wines are counterfeits. If you're not experienced or shopping in a high-end store, you will probably end up with something that is disgusting, and you naturally won't want to try it again or have anything outside of your comfort zone.

You know what? I am starting to think that real Chinese food misses a whole lot more than it hits. Lotus root stew is another example...
Fish Maw soup is awesome. Had tons of non chinese friends try it and they liked it also.

Wormius, I think you should advise Stay Golden on the wines that would go best with sea cucumber. Might help make it more palatable.

Silk worm cocoon in China. Was pretty gross but downed it. Then ate the other 2 on the stick so I wouldn't be wasting food.

Old Person Chocolate. Grossest thing ever. It was those loonie chocolates that a senior relative brought with her when visiting from BC. I swear she must've kept those things for a long time in her purse or cupboard or something because it tasted like an old person, that's the only way I could describe it. Ran to the sink and spat it out right away. My bro thought I was crazy cause it told him it tasted like an old person, so he tried it and basically did the same thing and agreed it tasted like old people.

From working in wine in China, I can tell you that it is well recognized that something like 85% or more of the import wine products in China are fake. Bottles are kept by servers at bars and restaurants and rebottled with cheap stuff to be resold, or there are just straight fakes and counterfeits.

It was in the news in China this year that there were more cases sold of a particular vintage of a top Bordeaux chateaux in a signle Chinese city than were actually produced in the year. Not surprising considering the prices it will go for though. Big business.

As far as Chinese wine (baijiu) goes. The good stuff is generally around $300/bottle, but it's very easy drinking.

Uni. Sea urchin. I ate mine. My girlfriend saw my reaction and couldn't do it. So I ate hers. Barely got it down.
