Toronto would go for another Summer games bid, I imagine.

Toronto could host the alpine events on a ski hill converted from a garbage dump.

The next time Canada bids for the Winter Olympics it will be between Calgary or Quebec. If Trudeau is the PM then Calgary will probably be out of luck.

Toronto will get the Summer Olympics before Calgary gets the Winter Olympics.

Both real possibilities (next 30 years) I should add.

Toronto is definitely in line for the Summer Olympics, especially if the 2015 Pan-Am Games go well. That's basically a test run for them.

You do realize at the when Calgary was selected to host the Winter Olympics, Pierre Trudeau was PM right?

Granted Quebec had recently host the Summer Olympics. So when Canada is due for the next winter Olympics, it would be fair for Quebec to get it since they've never hosted the winter before, and it's been a long while since the Olympics was in that province. (Assuming Toronto gets Summer beforehand, the Olympics would have been in every province it could be in) I would like for it to the Calgary though, both for bias and actual belief that it could support the games better.

Apparently the International Ski Federation has already rejected Mont a Liguori (near Quebec City) as it's unsuitable to host Olympic events. They are now hoping for the criteria to change in the future in order to host the Winter Olympics:

I think if Canada is to host a Winter Olympics in the near future, it will most definitely be in Calgary.

Holding alpine events a considerable distance from the host city isn't anything new. I don't see how Toronto could do it, but Edmonton doesn't seem that unreasonable. There are a number of other things holding back Edmonton though, like the fact that it's Edmonton.

When Montreal hosted the Olympics, I believe a lot of the rowing and such events were actually held in Kingston, about 2.5-3 hours away, so I think Edmonton could definitely fly as a winter Olympic host if the alpine events were a few hours away. I do think Toronto would be out of luck for a winter bid though.

The problem with Edmonton is that if you are 4/5 hours to Jasper you are probably the same to Canmore/Nikiska which have facilities. If you are going to go that distance and drive by the facilities that already exist what is the point. Unless there is a joint bid I really can't see Edmonton being a part of it.

Flames say Saddledome will be ready for NHL preseason

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...medium=twitter

Quote:
On Tuesday, team and building officials met to discuss where they were in their efforts and if they could still meet their target date of having the Saddledome ready for hockey by Sept. 1. That would allow the Flames to play their four home preseason games at the Saddledome in preparation for their NHL regular season home opener Oct. 6 against the Vancouver Canucks.
“From a public standpoint, and from a hockey standpoint, we want everything to be operational. This week was the time to decide if we could proceed as planned,” Flames’ president and CEO Ken King, said Wednesday, “and the answer is yes.”
Quote:
“We have orders in for new ice-making equipment,” said King. “We have a backup plant that we may not need but we have it ready. All of our event-floor equipment is new.”
No official cost has been put on the damage done to the Saddledome. All King would say on the subject was the facility has insurance coverage and that the paperwork is being done.

Which is obviously due to the location of the sailing venue

No way Edmonton gets it.
Jasper is at least 6 hours away with Olympic level traffic and only a 2-3 hour drive to Calgary. If Quebec is indeed out of the running, it's almost certainly going to be Calgary that bids next for Canada. It could take us a few go's at it though. Nagano and Pyeongchang were 20 years apart when you look at Asia hosting the games. Since only the US can bid against us when it's North America's turn and we just had them you're probably looking at 30-40 years for Calgary to host again (it was only 8 years between Salt Lake and Vancouver though so it could be on the low side of that scale).

I wonder if, even when the Saddledome opens up for the start of the season, whether there might be some unexpected "gremlins" that show up from time to time.

Perhaps unexpected failures will happen a higher rate than normal? I don't think that's out of the question at all. There's always going to be some tiny corner that didn't get cleaned properly.

What Calgary has going for it is that the IOC already likes the city, and that a lot of recent Olympics have barely succeeded - and did so by the skin of their teeth. Nothing really NEEDS to be built for Calgary to host. Granted, things really should be built to give the games a 21st century shine to them, but the foundation is already here.
