Am I the only one who think Gosling could pull of a good Sith Character? His violent outbursts in Drive and Gangster Squad were pretty darn good.

I'm sorry but how will they be able to make an interesting Villain that isn't a Sith? People aren't going to pay money to watch some Jedi reflect blasters. They want to see light saber fights.

Meh, I honestly don't know a lot about Effron, he seems type cast in the teen idol mold.. But that doesn't mean he lacks acting chops.

I hope they cast him as a hutt, then we'll see how good those acting chops are.

Guy can act, just gets a bad rap for being in Highschool Musical and other Disney crappola. But I would have no problem with him in Star Wars. Although, if the movie sucks he will probably have the same fate as Shia LeBeouf were people hate him because they think he somehow ruined their childhood movies.

The Sith line ended with the death of Palpatine and the death of Vader. The rule of two had its issues.
You can have a Jedi fall without going all the way to the Sith.
I think it would just completely poop on Star Wars Canon if you have another Sith rising right away.
There are other ways to do it. You could bring in a Kir Kanos or Carnor Jax type of character. You could bring in the Dark Trooper story line.
Hell you could have a vicious attack from outside the galaxy that makes a Jedi fall to the dark side for the right reasons ala Revan.
Just anything but actual Sith or Darth Characters.
And please no clone emperors or gold encrusted universe eating slabs of meat.
And no Vong.
At least not yet.
Heck its a stretch but Thrawn tied the skywalkers in a knot for three solid books.
And please no force ghost villians.

so the remains of the empire need to be destroyed right?
The battle of Endor couldn't have destroyed the entire Empire Fleet and army...
I remember reading star wars novels set after ROTJ and it was about han solo and princess leia's kids having the force...

Geez dude, you seem already set up for disappointment. I know the Star wars universe is a big one, but you sure are setting up a ton of parameters for disappointment.
It's Hollywood, they essentially screwed this up the minute they decided to make these new ones.

Who's set up for dissapointment? Seems like there's no other alternative for you.
Hollywood DID make the originals...

The Empire was massive it spanned the Galaxy. They probably had thousands of ships and millions and millions of troops.
Sure they snapped the head off of the Empire when Palpatine died and Vader died, but there's still an empire out there, not every world threw off its yoke the minute the Emperor turned into ash.
Its more then likely that the Rebellion was still badly outgunned and outmanned after destroying the second death star.
In real life the power vacuum would have been filled quickly and the Rebellion would have been hunted down with even greater energy without really bad plans by Palpatine.

I would be really disappointed if they rolled out another Sith threat. It would literally take an atomic dump over everything established in the first 6 movies, and to me it would be incredibly lazy. Its a massive galaxy of Lore, there are probably 100's of other credible threats out there.
You could have resurgent Madalorians for example. During their old republic war they completely fought the jedi to a stand still.
you can have alien threats, pirate threats, Imperial threats.
Just don't bring back Palpatine, or Vader or some long dead Sith Lord, it would be lazy writing.
The Sith lineage died out when Vader threw Palpatine into the furnace. Two there are no more no less, one to embody power and one to crave it. The Sith became incredibly powerful because they spent thousands of years hiding, spinning their webs and relearning the force, they evolved and changed in secrecy with the idea of the the master teaching the apprentice til the apprentice became more powerful then the master and then killing the master and taking his place while grooming a new apprentice.
I know in the EU they completely pooped on what to me was a very cool order by adding secret apprentices and students like Starkiller and others.
But bringing in another Sith means that Anakin didn't bring balance to the force, that the rule of two and the ascension of power meant absolutely nothing. Just like bringing back Palpatine as a clone not once but twice was dumb.
The idea of transference was lost sometime between the fall of Darth Zannah and Plageous.
Even the concept of immortality was suppossed to be a selfless act and out of the reach of the Sith. Something that was kinda pooped on in the EU and in the Old Republic game.

I would love a Thrawn storyline, but the main problem is that the Thrawn storylines involve the main original trilogy characters. It would mean a quasi-reboot (casting new Leia, Han, Luke), which could work or look really poor. At least Abrams has been involved in a reboot, so he knows the challenges of directing and creating a movie that appeals to hardcore and new fans alike.

If you destroyed the leadership and capital (the death star) of an empire like that, you'd probably see some kind of civil war within the empire and you see it eventually split up into a few smaller empires.
Other alternatives could be that a new leadership takes over. It may or may not involve the Sith.
Alternatively, the planets could go back to a free state. I think the idea was that a good part of the Empire's fleet had been destroyed in the final death star battle, as the empire had invested huge resources into defending the death star. The individual plantes presumably would be able to raise their own armies. So if the empire was not popular among the individual planets, its remains could be toppled pretty quickly.

Which was exactly the point of the X-Wing series of novels. The Empire basically split apart into different factions under various warlords and leaders. The Rebellion won a major victory at Endor but they were still not strong enough to take control. They had to systematically hunt down the other groups and take them out.

I liked the Thrawn character, but I always through what was funny about that trilogy was that he pretty much lost every major battle in those books. The ones that were kind of hinted at were his wins.
He'd always lose and smile and say, well its all part of my bigger plan now lets look at some alien art or porn or whatever.
He'd have to be a way bigger threat in the movies to be credible.
He did found the Empire of the Hand which was a really interesting idea.

No no. I am completely open to whatever they bring. Cannot possibly be any worse than episode 1 can it? All I was trying to say is that to a super fan like the captain, theres generally no winning when it comes to hollywood putting out a new trilogy.
Hollywood today is a far different beast than when the originals came out. Just look at the Landscape. Disney now owns lucasfilms and ILM....so right off the bat the opening sequence is going to be different. DISNEY! OKay, honestly, that scares me a little bit. Could end up being a jar jar extravaganza fest.
