how many cities in the world have hosted Olympics more than once?
I would think that having this facilities up to snuff would be for the community that would be using them year round. Not for a one off event. Look at the Oval in Richmond, it is now an amazing facility for all sports, year round, not just speed skating.
I think that these facilities futures should consider what they can be used for on a daily basis and not what major events they can host. The Saddledome is a building with lots of history but if it can't be used in a productive manner for the community on a daily basis once a new one has been built, then maybe it is worth it to tear down and create more space for something else.
Upgrading everything to new state of the art equipment because of this flood is probably not the best plan. I can't imagine them doing this, it doesn't seem like it would be worth if the new building is being built within the next 3 to 4 years.

A bunch of cities have hosted more than once. Lake Placid hosted thrice.
I'd bet that Canada's next host will be Quebec City and than Calgary once again. Could be 50+ years out though.

Not really that uncommon, I can think of the following off the top of my head:
March 1968 - Parts of the Philadelphia Spectrum roof blow off, Flyers play the final month of their home games in various available locales. Sixers play at the Covention Center, where they had moved from the year before.
1978 - Hartford Civic Center Roof Collapses, Whalers play their next two home seasons in Springfield, Mass.
1991 - Pieces of concrete fall from Stade Olympique in Montreal, Expos play all road games the final month of the season
2010 - Metrodome roof collapses from snow, Vikings play the next day home game in Detroit and another game at U. of Minnesota field
I'm sure there are others

Game 4 of the 1988 Stanley Cup Finals (Oilers at Bruins). Game played in fog before a power outage; the league ended up cancelling the game altogether. Anybody know why it was moved back to Edmonton for the "second" Game 4? Could they not get the Garden repaired in time?

From what I remember the fog caused a total meltdown and they had to replace the whole grid in the building, I think if Boston could have come back games 6 and 7 would have been at the Garden.

Game 5 would have been in Boston, game 6 in Edmonton, and game 7 in Boston.

Well that just isn't true at all. Lake Placid held the Winter Olympics twice with a 50 year gap in between the dates (1932 and 1980).
In the Summer Olympics London (3X - 1908, 1948, 2012), Athens (1896, 2004) and Los Angeles (1932, 1984).
The fact is that a city hosting the Olympics twice is very rare and I don't think holding onto an expensive building to maintain would be a good use of funds, especially if done out of the hope of an Olympic games in the future.

Two other cities also hosted the winters twice.
I'm not saying that we should hold on to a building just for the sake of the olympics, I'm just saying there is a very real chance that we get the winter games again within our lifetimes (Well maybe not some of you guys ).
Winter games have a lot less options for host cities when you consider that they have to rotate the games around the world. Especially if they keep growing in size, popularity and # of events.

As someone who was 6 when Calgary hosted the Olympics and wasn't even around Calgary until much later I hope we get the Olympics again and think we should make a serious bid. The '88 games still have a lasting positive effect on this city and with how much the city has grown and changed it would only add to that. Like Polak said above, Winter Olympic spots have less potential and I think the OIC knowing Calgary, knowing Canada, knowing a good job we could put on would be open to it.

Innsbrook only hosted the games twice because the initial host city (Denver) decided that the cost was to great, as did other host cities. I guess you could say that they hosted the games twice, but one was by default. In the case of the 1948 games the location was selected because the Swiss were neutral and had facilities.
I guess what I am trying to say is that if people are hoping that the Dome stays as part of an Olympic bid it would be foolish as by the time that Calgary would be considered again the new building itself would be aging and in need of replacement.

Some say that since Albertville and Chamonix are only 73 km from each other or Albertville and Grenoble being 82 km apart, that area hosted the Olympics 3 times. Innsbruck won the 1964 games and then as you said by default for the 1976 games. Salt Lake City wanted to be the host after Denver didn't want them but the IOC didn't want another US city. Lake Placid hosted the 1980 games by default too as it was the only bid because Vancouver pulled out. Both of the LA games were by default, Tehran pulled out of the race for the 1984 games. Other default games were Athens 1896, Paris 1900, and Chamonix 1924. London didn't win the 1908 games, Rome did but due to Mt. Vesuvius erupting the games were relocated to the UK. London 1948 was given to them since they won the 1944 games but didn't happen due to WWII. http://www.webcitation.org/5xFvf0ufx

With the Winter Olympics being the only one Canada can really compete in, I doubt we'll see Calgary ever get it again in our lifetimes. Edmonton would probably throw a fit if they didn't get consideration, and I bet Toronto would trump any other city for the next Olympic bid

Poor Nittmo. Was so adamant that the Dome would be out of commission for at least 6 months.

Toronto does not have the facilities to support the alpine events so that would put Calgary out front of them. It has also been said that the 88 Olympics were the most profitable and best the IOC has seen.

I'm thinking that Edmonton's distance from actual mountains for Alpine competitions would give them a first round exit in the bid process. Nobody wants a six hour round trip to take in Super G.

Pretty sure every games is the best the IOC has ever seen, sort of their stock send off language.

Toronto has no chance, there isn't anywhere within 500 miles where the alpine events could be held. Even Edmonton I'd say probably has no chance, the closest place to hold alpine events would be Jasper, which is a 4 hour drive with good traffic, with Olympic traffic it would likely be 6 each way - not very feasible IMO.
