Take the bet, the Oilers are going to plummet to the bottom crushed by pressure and expectations

You should take any straight up bet against any team in the league finishing last. There are just too many variables, even the pre-season consensus worst team in the league (whoever that might be) is not even money to actually finish last.

If Kipper stole two games for us, then he also cost us at least five games. He was horrible last year (except for a handful of games).

Iggy did not steal any games and for every game Kipper stole he was largely responsible for losing another one.

No I am betting that the Flames finish better than 30th. He is saying they will finish dead last.

Then get on it. Odds are in your favour big time. Everybody had the BJ's pegged dead last at the beginning of last season and we saw how that turned out.

Not likely goaltending is going to be much better this year with the guys we have going into the season and not good enough to likely change much in terms of wins and loses.

In most if not all of the wins in the last part of the season the Flames were badly outplayed or outsucked by the other team. It was pretty rare that the team played well in those games and if that is what we get this year from the team last place should be pretty much locked up.

As to the OP I think the Flames are likely the favorite to get last place but not higher than 50% and there are a group of 5-6 other teams that could suck more especially if you take into account injuries. If you get spots 1-29 and he wins if they are last take the bet the odds are likely that someone else will be 30th even if no one team has better odds of being there than the Flames.
Go back to the last game against the Oiler young guns who were still fighting for a playoff spot. The Flames young guys totally destroyed the Oilers and outplayed some of the other teams they beat.

That's what I am thinking. The only thing that even made me second-guess for a moment is that the guy I am betting with is not prone to make rash bets. He's a pretty analytical guy who watches a TON of sports. The variables I would see going against me are:
Unproven goaltending at an NHL level
Majority of our team is young guys with none to minimal experience
Coaching strategy that sometimes seemed to leave defensive gaps (last year anyways)
No real gamebreaker type players yet

If there's one group of fans that should know what a 30th overall roster looks like it would be Oilers fans.

Not really, every year they finished last they were telling everybody and their brother that this was the year they were going to be a playoff team.

They may have outplayed them that game. It seems to fit what I remember and part of the pathetic Oilers play down the stretch.

I am thinking of the last wins against Colorado, Phoenix, Anaheim and Detroit where really both teams played awful and the Flames were either slightly less god awful or more lucky (Phoenix, Detroit games).

I think people still found it fun to watch the young guys play but those "wins" showed a lot more concern than promise in terms of how the team played.

And not much reason to think the goalies this year are going to be much better than Kipper was last season without the skill to pull off the big games he had.

This is my hope... can you imagine if they had to lose the #1 overall pick due to the Kovalchuk penalty... that would be amazing.

Devils, Nashville and us. I think those are the three worst teams, but the other two have better goaltending by far. I'm sure some mystery team will outsuck us, but we'll be bottom 3.

The odds the Flames finish dead last is 20% at best. Easily accept it unless you absolutely can't afford to lose $100.

Too many guys now that care on the Flames roster, no way they pass the late season "surge" for last by some other NHL train wrecks for last place

I'm not a bettor, but if I were, I'd even consider betting on the oilers finishing worse than the Flames. I think the Flames and oilers both finish in a similar spot to last year, which was pretty close together.

I really doubt the Flames finish 30th, I'd take that bet at even odds.

I'm reverting back to my rose coloured glasses of the early 2000's and saying Brathwaite can steal any game, we'll make the playoffs! I mean this team is clearly better, it's addition by subtraction!

That's how I enjoyed games back then anyway...

Top five pick is a lock. In the West, Colorado should improve and Nashville may stay the same in my mind. I still can't believe how bad Tampa and Carolina were last year.....just so much talent. I think both those teams will be much better next year.

So I think the Flames have Nashville and Florida to contend for last place. Next season is going to be awesome though.... my expectations are pretty low and I sure can't wait to see us turn the page on the last 5 years!
