If Ganger went to arbitration it he'd get a one year deal and then become a 24 year old UFA next summer. You don't think he'd get more than that as a UFA next year when the cap goes up? The short term us also a win for the oilers. They are basically getting him for his prime years and then another team will overpay for him as a UFA.

he's being overpaid with this deal, I fail to see how that's a win for the oilers right now....

That is a horrible deal unless Gagner can:

1 - find consistency in his game. It seems like he would have a few multi point games and then dissapear for a while.
2 - Be a 50-60 point player.

He is getting paid like a #1 center tweener....hell have to produce like it going forward.

Not really. He'll only be 26 years old when the contract is set to expire. That's likely when he'll be entering his prime.

Think they would have been better off trading him. Seems like another Pisani or Horcoff deal to me, guy has one decent stretch over a small sample size and the Oilers back up the brinks truck to his house.

In all the years of watching him he has never been a difference maker on the ice, to me he's a second or third tier scorer who isn't great in his own zone and gets pushed around. The only time I remember him in the 40+ games against the flames he's played is his lame fight against a 40 year old Craig Conroy.

He probably would have gotten that much in a year or 2 as an unrestricted free agent anyway.

It's not the worst deal in the league, but it is a little high.

I wonder if he'd have asked for that if Atlanta hadn't moved to Winnipeg.

If he had consistency he'd be a first line player. He doesn't and he is a second line guy.

He's a career 51 point pace player through over 400 regular season games and is 23. It's a safe bet he'll produce at that 50-60 point pace given that is what he has produced at all along. It's not a stretch to suggest that he can be a 60+ point player.

I'm sure some inflation has maybe happened in his numbers but he'd be a top 6 player on most teams in the league. Second line guys are getting 4-5 mil a year now. His contract is right in line with that.

I think the AAV is about right for a guy with his numbers and a contract that covers UFA years.

But I think Gagner is one of those players that, while he gets his points, you can't win with. Too small for a 2nd line C - especially when your 1st line C (and most of your top 6) is also small. Not very good team construction, IMO.

As a Flames fan, I am very happy that he is signed with the Oilers for 3 more years and with a NMC (after year one).

I thin MacTavish should have traded him and this is a bad signing - unless of course they move him this year which I suppose is a possibility.

What is a #1 center tweener?

I don't think Gagner will ever be a #1 C in the NHL.

For those suggesting Gagner should have been traded, would you be happy if the Oilers were your team and Boyd Gordon was all of a sudden your #2 centre?

How come there's south mention of UFA years...isn't that at 27?...or 26 if enough games have been played?

Nope, but if I was an Oilers fan I wouldn't be happy if Sam Gagner was my second line center either.

It's 27, or 7 professional years played. Gagner went pro when he was 18, so he would have been UFA at 25 (actually, just shy of his 25th birthday since he is born in August).

As a 25 year old UFA, he would have received a big overpayment by someone. Having said that, the Oilers probably should have thought harder on when they brought him in.

I assume MacT was ready to use that in the arbitration hearing if the need arose.

Gagner is a Mike Comrie type player. Will have the odd good offensive season but if your team is depending on his for a top 6 center...your in trouble.

The insanity in Edmonton Continues:

RNH 6-0 171
Eberle 5-10 174
Gagner 5-11 191
Hall 5-11 180
Yakipov 5-11 190
Perron 5-11 170 - 195 (various sources)
Justin Schultz 6-1 163
Hemsky 6-0 192

This team is smaller and less physical than the Saskatoon Blades that went to the Memorial Cup.

McTavish had an understanding of this when he took over as GM. Hemsky was going to be moved. Likely one of the small top guys were going.

The fact that there was not going to be anywhere near what would be considered equal value for the small guys coming back (Think Tanguay for David Jones, or Kassian for Hodgson) McTavish is doubling down and going small yet for another losing season and locking in to make it even harder to fix.

If this team somehow made the playoffs how would you coach against them in a seven game series?
