It's Official - NHL Players will be in Sochi
As a shock to no one:
Yahoo Sports NHL@YahooSportsNHL2m
BREAKING: It's official, the NHL is going to the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Quote:
"The National Hockey League features the most international player population in professional sports, and our outstanding athletes take tremendous pride in representing their homelands on the global stage," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "The decision to participate in the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi was in many ways a difficult one, but one that we know will be well received by our Players and, most importantly, by the vast majority of our fans and sports fans everywhere."
"The Players are very pleased that an agreement has been reached that will allow the world's best hockey players to compete at the Winter Games in February," said Don Fehr, NHLPA Executive Director. "Having the opportunity to wear their nation's sweater in Sochi is something the players look forward to."

I'm likely in the minority, but I am was kind of interested to see the tournament go back to amateurs. Of course, with the KHL and other European leagues still committed, I guess the NHL might as well too.

Good, I wouldn't be watching if they didn't, or at least not as closely.

Well it would be pretty much the World Juniors with higher stakes. I think it would still be great.
Although I am very glad the NHL is going (not that I ever really thought there was a possibility that they wouldn't).

In Calgary at the end of August, probably at WinSport on the Olympic ice. I don't know if they've announced the exact dates yet (I can't find them online anywhere). I suspect we'll hear the invite list sometime next week.

Berra?
He was on the Swiss World Championship team.
Edit: Not to mention Hudler

Hudler, Sven, Berra, Backlund maybe. Ramo if he plays well enough. Got to remember his play on international ice would be a big consideration. I know, Rask, Rinne, Backstrom. But only one out of those has been having great seasons lately.

That's the thing, it wouldn't have been amateurs, it would have been non-NHL professionals. Which would have sucked, unless you really like the Spengler Cup.

Rask, Rinne, Niemi, Lehtonen, Backstrom. Ramo has absolutely zero chance of going, unless he shutouts the opposition in every game he plays.
