So this guy is basically a one trick pony on the back end? Yup, he'll fit right in with the Oil.

and? He could be a whipping boy like Butler. A player much better than a large portion of the fan base cares to admit.

Maybe the Oilers felt that it was time to take a stand and show the KHL that NHL teams can in fact outbid them for mediocre Russian talent?

The Oilers really did need to fill that #1 defenceman spot.

Now they have Ference and Grebeshkov to fight over it.

Ouch.

Meh... decent depth move for them. Low risk one year contract. Sure he will be a decent stop-gap until some more of their prospects break into the NHL.

Seriously though, what have they got against Fistric?

Heck, I'd rather see Fistric on the Flames over Russell, Smith, Butler, or SOB.

Although, to be fair, I might take Grebeshkov over any of those guys too.

My memory is muddy, but Grebeshkov was at best a #4 defender with offensive upside. I went to check his stats and he has easily the best numbers of any of the defense during his first 2 seasons in Edmonton (39 points in 08/09 and a +12). He had a horrible 3rd year, but that was the first of 3 straight last place finishes for the Oilers.

Sure the Oilers could use more grit, but watching them last year I noticed how often they struggled to transition to their potent offensive forwards because the only guy that could make a decent first pass was Schultz (the talented one). I don't think this is necessarily a bad move. Grebeshkov is still only 29 and has a lot of experience at this point.

I like this signing for the Oilers. He's a player they know and should be able to use him effectively. He isn't a top pairing guy, but he will be more than sufficient on the second pair. For the Oilers, they are probably better off collecting a bunch of guys that can play in the 3-4 slots than try and force the issue and splurge for a guy that might be able to play in the #1 slot. Better balance and value in the lineup.

The fact that he couldnt make $1.5M in the KHL or anywhere else says a lot.

from what i remember he was a decent top4 guy, who provided offense from the blue line, but was prone to defensive lapses.

@1.5 million not a bad signing, however, is the oiler's problem really getting offense from the defense, or is it having guys who can actually defend?

Former Oiler removed from playing in the NHL. When I originally saw this, I thought he was being hired back as another recycled Oiler into a management role... then realized he has no cups.
