Cost pretty much. Middle East oil is much cheaper to produce than oil from the tar sands.

Who do you think pays to get scrutiny and pressure on Canadian Oil?

What I don't understand is they jailed her attacker and found him guilty but still put her in jail? What a ####ed up country.

Where did you get this from?

EDIT: Ahh, I found it.

How messed up is that?!

How can you find her guilty when you found HIM guilty?

I could see that from a business or government standpoint. What I don't get are the sheer amount of special interest groups targeting the oilsands, but not nearly as many targeting social issues in the Middle East. I'd like to see Greenpeace get their ass into Saudi too! Though they may not the into the beheadings and all that jazz.

Hmm, another non-backwards move by a non-backwards state that bases their laws on a non-backwards religion.

This should be fun.

Simple answer. Social activism is not punished by death here.

Oh my god... the NHL discipline system is run under Sharia law. No wonder the Southern US hates the hockey.

They were both charged with having sex outside of marriage. She cannot successfully pursue the rape charge unless the guy admits rape or male muslim witnesses testify on her behalf.

The police probably went to his door, he said she consented. That's, however, still a crime under the moral laws as they are not a married couple. The woman's testimony is not considered in the legal system. According to the courts, the only act that occurred was consensual sex between two unmarried people.

Under their legal system, the verdicts and charges are correct.

Edit: I read your link and, yes, your right it doesn't make sense that he would be convicted of rape. I read through the link within the link, and I don't see the rape conviction in there. My guess is that he was also charged with sex outside of marriage and not rape, and the article got it wrong. This would make sense, as she was also charged with perjury, which means the courts decided she was lieing about what happened.

Been saying this for years.

Don't ever go to Dubai. Let that POS city die off.

If it's built for tourists, and gets no tourists, the Saudi's will get the hint. Or at least will look stupid.

Not usually so one sided in these cultural debates, but it's seriously a fake city manufactured for one reason.

Never ever go to Dubai.

Isn't Las Vegas built for the same reason?

I don't know if you ever watch that show; "Banged Up Abroad" (or whatever it is called now, I think they changed the name).

There was an episode where a guy from Scotland was in Saudi Arabia for work, and while he was there, he hooked up with a fellow online. He ended up breaking it off due to the dangers but then was busted after trying to hook up with someone online again later. He was actually a heterosexual, but bi-curious at the time and came across the website.

Apparently there are "sting operations" where they put fake ads on hook-up sites. So not only do they bust people for being gay, but they actively try to entice men into experimenting. That was Saudi Arabia, but I could see it happening in the UAE too.

I actually had a Las Vegas comparison in my first draft but left it out cause I felt it made my post wordy.

Las Vegas is far more fun and you have a lower chance of being jailed (or raped apparently).

And no, it wasn't built for the same reason at all.

The tourist factor is not the point I was making. Lots of cities were built for tourists.

Sort of, but the foundation of Dubai's economy at this point is the fact that it's Dubai. Las Vegas at least has gambling.

Regardless, when our civilization crumbles, both of these cities will be examined by future archaeologists and we'll be mocked for our arrogance.

I fail to understand how the Saudi's will be impacted by avoiding the UAE city of Dubai?
