Well, no I don't.

They make mistakes. We hear a hell of a lot of grumbling about how the justice system (both in Canada and the States) screw things up all the time. This time though, it's "the jury says so, so they must be right".

That being said, like everyone else here, I didn't watch every minute of the trial.

I know a few facts though -- that a dimwitted little turd who shouldn't have been carrying a rusty spatula, let alone a gun, was following a kid around because he thought he was "up to no good", and then he killed the kid with his trusty gun, and got off scot-free. And they gave him his gun back.

Perhaps the verdict did follow the letter of Florida law. I don't know. I'm as much as an expert on it as anyone here - which makes me a non-expert.

Would anyone feel safe with this Zimmerman clown living next door, knowing he was walking around with a gun in his belt? If he was my neighbor, I'd be concerned about wearing a raincoat while opening my car. He'd probably shoot me, tell everyone I punched him in the nose, and maybe that time he'd end up in the slammer, but I'd be dead and that wouldn't help me much.
Agreed. This little napolean with basically no self defense skills (rated one out of ten by his mma coach) compensates by carrying a loaded gun and runs around confronting people. Uhh, sorry i think i'd leave that to trained police officers.

And by the way, Zimmerman used the gun for exactly what it was intended, to shoot a bullet. I am not sure what more training would have provided him.

I am actually expecting a full on online mental breakdown
from you based on some of the stuff you typed up in this and some other threads the last few months.
Best news I've heard all day.

And please, let's see the evidentiary basis for your conclusion that Martin jumped Zimmerman. I'm waiting.

The Daily show segment on this verdict. John Oliver's been filling in for Jon Stewart this summer, and he's been doing well, and obviously trying to be as funny as possible in every segment. But in this one he seemed genuinely pissed off. It's a pretty good watch.

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad when you listen to the phone call Zimmerman made to the cops. He claims that it makes no sense that he is out walking in the rain. Like seriously, people don't walk in the rain where he is from?

When I am not working, I walk pretty much everywhere I go, whether it is raining, night, or whatever; because I like to walk. In fact, if it is raining or cold, sometimes I wear a hoody too. If some doosh approached me because he thought that I looked like I was up to no good, I would be pretty offended. I wouldn't care if some strata council appointed him or not, and I certainly wouldn't cooperate with him.

The thing is, people are very protective of their stuff, both their house and their neighborhood. If you are walking somewhere that someone who lives in the area feels you don't belong, they may confront you about it...and it's not illegal for them to do so. You may get all offended about it, but that doesn't change that they are allowed to do so. The difference is that here in Canada, you are likely to just get beat up, not shot.

A lot of things that are legal still aren't intelligent or morally proper. I can go and start harassing people and be within the law. That wouldn't mean that I would not bear some responsibility for the outcome if those people take offense.

Maybe not enough to be charged with a crime, but at least enough that I wouldn't expect many people to make excuses for the behaviour.

Or they found reasonable doubt to to some incredibly bad investigation work, a police investigator who was completely compromised and the dumbest tactic in the history of any justice system. So there was reasonable doubt in that case.

Hmmm, usually we're looking at it here on a case by case basis. This is based on the story at the time. Funny that we're doing the same thing here.

That's not a fact, that's an opinion. I might agree with your opinion Rouge but that doesn't make it a fact.

Yup, while in a neighbourhood where he was a neighbourhood watch captain. And in a neighbourhood that had several break ins recently.

Glad that you left out the meat of the case, are you going to write a script that stars Dennis Franz as George Zimmerman?

It did and that's what matters.

Probably not, I'm huge into gun control, I think the 2nd amendment is long over due for an overhaul.

Plus in the trial he didn't just tell people that he was punched and attacked and head his head bonked on the ground, because as is his right he didn't testify. The investigation and forensics that were presented to the jury showed that.

So if you punched him a couple of times and then straddled him and kept up the attack including banging his head off of the ground, then you and I could have a discussion around theory.

But to snark and leave out major parts of the discussion doesn't make it a compelling argument with all due respect.

Anyways, I'm almost glad that I'm going to Edmonton today, this thread is exhausting.

Everyone knows there are lots of guns in America. Two hundred million of them in private hands is the usual estimate, about half of them handguns, making the United States far and away the most densely armed country on the planet.

Less well known is that the U.S. also has, by far, the highest rates of serious mental illness in the world. A 2004 study by the World Health Organization found that 26 per cent of Americans had some form of mental disorder, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The only country anywhere near this level was Ukraine, at 21 per cent.

Some people don't need guns to kill other people. Unarmed does not mean "not dangerous".

So, Z could have killed him by not using a gun, and TM was dangerous?

Got it, makes real good sense.
