air bubbles in ice make it appear white. I'm guessing they don't take the time to let the air escape the water before freezing an NHL rink

Here is when the NHL experimented with blue ice during the lockout in '05 in the AHL

Isn't the surface below the ice painted white?

Awesome idea. It's for the off-season. Lighten up (and I don't mean the ice colour).

The Hitmen did pink ice for a breast cancer game last year. And... it was damn near impossible to see the lines. It is amazing how much it throws you when you change the colour.

I disagree. They've done lots to improve and I personally think they took a dive last season.

Wouldnt surprise me if they were in the playoffs.

As for the yellow ice....its Nashville, they need gimmicks to keep people interested. Much ado about nothing.....

No, an initial layer of ice is painted.

Modern rinks have a specific procedure for preparing the surface. With the pipes cold, a thin layer of water is sprayed on the sand or concrete to seal and level it (or in the case of concrete, to keep it from being marked). This thin layer is painted white or pale blue for better contrast

No, because they paint them bright white not pearl white.

I would honestly not mind if each team was allowed to paint their ice whatever color they wanted, so long as certain requirements for contrast were maintained so that players and viewers could handle it.

I concur. And while we're at it, I always liked their yellow jerseys too. There, I said it.
