All I hope for is that the Flames opening night isn't on the same night as a Heat game.

You know what? I wouldn't be against it. If it keeps the advertising off jerseys for a bit longer I am all for selling naming rights to the divisions. Plus I could see the league easily getting 25+ million per year for each individual division. Staring $100+ in the face wouldd be tough to turn down.

Here's an out there idea (not sure if I even like it or not). Each team that wins a Stanley Cup has the opportunity to rename their division after a historical great...perhaps with a rule that they cannot have played in the past 30 years or something:

Cooke (LA Kings founder), Mikita, Shore and Mellon/Heinz, etc.?

Of course, teams like Ottawa and San Jose would have to get creative, but I'm sure they could figure something out.

I think they should go back to the Patrick Adams Norris and Smythe divisions.

Yes, let's go back to obscure early to mid-20th century hockey last names instead of generic geographic names that help new and casual fans understand conference alignment. Makes perfect sense.

I agree it's 2013 not 1985. Time to move forward not backwards.

When I went to STH info session in late May I asked Rollie about this after it was basically done and he said the holdup was indeed the Olympics. The problem being the NHL wants the Olympics to pay the insurance cost for the players and the Olympics want the league/teams to cover the costs. At the time he figured it would only take another week or two, but I guess not...

That's what he said anyway.

Speaking of the Olympics (apologies if this is the wrong thread), there's this report:

I disagree. The thing that sets the NHL apart from other leagues is tradition.

If fans need generic geographic names to understand how the conferences are aligned then they probably aren't smart enough to understand hockey to start with.

Also what would you call the Eastern conferences that are not really aligned by geography due to them spreading out the southern teams.

Norris Division
Smythe Divison
Adams Division
Patrick Division

Playing in the Gary and Bettman conferences.

NHL Schedule & More Could Be Revealed on Wednesday
POSTED JUL 16, 2013 BY AARON PORTZLINE | 0 COMMENTS
The NHL hopes to release its league-wide schedule on Wednesday, but the key word attached to that plan is "tentative." It's always a big day when the league releases the 1,230-game slate, but there's more riding this year than ever.
Division names and schedule look to be a go for today, hopefully.

This is all Bill Daly was giving up today:

Chris Kuc@ChrisKuc2h
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly on Olympic participation and release of schedule: “I expect both issues will be dealt with this week.”
